Is its face red! (Monster of the Day #252 Bonus)

Sandy noted in his philistine’s response to the tremendous portrait of Belulah posted below (I don’t know Art, but I know what I like) as the Monster of the Day: “And I must say I had not pictured the Cucumber Terror as being bright red in color.” And so the perfect time to post some photos Rock Baker had sent to me some time ago. Blaisdell (on the left, below), you magnificent bastard!

Notice how the material, probably foam of some sort, is already starting to deteriorate. Even if Blaisdell had not appallingly set fire to many of his creations for the climax of How to Make a Monster, his astounding art still would have not lasted long. Sic transit gloria.

So he’s more of a red pepper than a cucumber monster. Makes sense since Venus is so hot.

  • Rock Baker

I wasn’t sure you’d gotten these. Did I send all three? I have a great one of Paul on the floor being choked by his monster (some great detail in that shot).

Bob Burns (the guy on the right) did have a couple of Paul’s creations restored, as seen in the book IT CAME FROM BOB’S BASEMENT. At least one Saucerman mask and a Control Device survive in that form. A bit more long lasting, as they were made of wood, are the Saucermen’s Saucer and the Control Box from Not of This Earth.

So, is this week’s theme “monsters with claws” or, more specifically, “red monsters with claws”?

Oh! Have you done the Gorgon from Teenagers From Outer Space?

  • Rock: I don’t remember that third one, unless it was sent separately. Could you resend it?

I was wondering if that was Bob Burns! I’m not used to seeing him so young.

  • The Gargan has been done, sadly, as has Ebirah.

  • KeithB

Wasn’t this one done before, too? Albeit, as a publicity still.

  • Rock Baker

    Re-sent!

  • fish eye no miko

Ken Begg said this: “The Gargan has been done, sadly, as has Ebirah.”

    Aw, dang. Oh, well. (-:

Oh! You could call this week, “Quick, Honey, Grab the Drawn Butter!” Week. (-:

  • Rock Baker

IT was more like a mushroom, based on toadstools. (Being a bit of a rube, I’m not sure what ‘drawn’ butter is. I don’t think I’ve ever asked!)

  • Tork_110

He learned almost too late that the Venusian is a goofy creature…

  • fish eye no miko

@Rock Baker: Drawn butter is the melted butter that stuff like lobster and crab is served with.

  • The Rev.

I never knew this was its color. That’s neat. I shouldn’t be surprised, though; I recall that the She Creature was purple (been a while since I’ve seen How to Make a Monster but I think that’s right).

  • Rock Baker

So drawn just means melted, must be a regional thing. Thanks, Fish Eye!

Rev, The She Creature was a wild assortment of greens with pinks and purples on the face. I have a close-up color shot of her face, and its amazing how colorful she was!

  • Marsden

Drawn butter also refers to melting the butter and skimming that cloudy stuff out of it. That pure golden liquid is “drawn butter”

Leave it to me to be the culinary pedantic on the monster site. D’oh!

  • Marsden
  • Rock Baker

Hah hah! Well, its nice to know I have a place I can go to find answers to burning questions I might have!

Here’s one now, does anyone have a good way to keep snakes away from one’s house? I found one on my doorstep big enough to eat my shoe!

here’s a quote from Roger Corman’s book HOW I MADE A HUNDRED MOVIES IN HOLLYWOOD AND NEVER LOST A DIME: “I’d reasoned that a being from a planet with a powerful field of gravity would sit very low to the ground. So with my effects man, Paul Blaisdell, I’d designed a rather squat creature. But just before we were to shoot the climactic showdown with Beverly (Garland) and the monster, she stood over it and stared it down, hands on hips. “So,” she said with a derisive snarl, making sure I heard her, “you’ve come to conquer the world, have you ? Well, take THAT !” And she kicked the monster in the head. I got the point immediately. By that afternoon the monster was rebuilt ten feet high. Lesson one: aways make the monster bigger than your leading lady”.

  • sandra

I just read my first posting. Sorry for all the typos; like I said, it posted itself before I could proofread. That should be ‘field of gravity’, not ‘fiend” ( though I supposed ‘fiend of gravity’ is one way of describing the monster.)

  • Tork_110

Lesson two: Beverly Garland was awesome.

  • Corrected, my dear. However, I have to say that “fiend of gravity” sounds fantastic.

  • Rock Baker

It does sound cool! Would anyone object to my using Fiend of Gravity as the title of a future Dinosaur Girl episode?
