UPDATE: Snow Day! (Week?)

Well, posting will be even lighter than usual. Less than two days after everyone left after B-Fest (thank the Lord for that), we got smacked here in Chicago. I live by O’Hare, where it’s been especially good; we’ve gotten about 21 inches of snow, and it all drifted in front of my house trailer. I was able to keep the door clear by getting up every hour last night and clearing the porch in the raging blizzard (fun!), but instead of the porch rising high above the ground, it (and my car) is now surrounded by literally four feet of snow. I dug out about three feet out earlier–although with the snow four feet to the side, and getting higher as I threw more snow on top, well, do the math–and will try to get out every couple of hours to continue to do so, and maybe through a long day of work actually get my car free.

Not that it matters in the short term; there are literally no roads here in the trailer park. Now I have to wonder if they have a plow small enough to do only one lane, and powerful enough to deal with the no doubt tens of tons of snow in the roads. Even so, the only reason I’m worrying about clearing my land out today is that (fun!) the temps are due to fall tonight, from somewhere between minus four to minus twenty degrees. Windchills could knock it down to minus 40.
In the end, I’m fine IF the power doesn’t go out, or the furnace quits, or the pipes freeze. With temps that low the latter is a good bet, although ironically the super high snow may insulate the bottom of the trailer enough to keep that from happening.

Assuming those three things hold for another 24 hours or so, I should be fine until they come dig us out. I should have gotten more real food, but while I didn’t, I have tons of snacks left over from B-Fest, and more importantly, lots and lots of bottled water. I’m sure there are people in the park even less prepared than I am.

So…how’s your day?

UPDATE:  So I finally took a nap (having, again, been up all night on the hour to keep my porch clear so I could actually someday hope to exit the house).  I woke up about 3:30 in the afternoon, and found to my surprise that they had indeed managed to plow the middle lane of the road. Of course, this of necessity resulted in huge, thick berms of compacts ice against the cars. I figured I had days ahead of me clearing up, mostly because I am grossly obese and out of shape and only wanted to work twenty minutes at a shot do I didn’t die of a heart attack.

The kids next door–mostly the older brother, maybe 14, although his ten year old sibling stayed in there–offered to help. Needless to say, I took them up on their offer. Eventually I had to stop working because I’m a big fat ass who just ran out of juice, which was really lame, because they (and eventually their dad) were clearing my land for me while I stood there like a very, very big lump. For what it’s worth, I gave them a pretty sizable amount of money for their efforts. It was well worth the price, though. Although half my parking is now taken up with a gigantic amount of snow (and probably will be for the next month, given what temps in February are like), I can, if my power and/or furnace goes out tonight during the coming deep freeze snap, actually hop in my car and drive to a motel, if nothing else. Otherwise it would have easily taken me through the weekend to dig out by myself, and then I would have been working in the bitter cold for the next couple of days.

Man, how did people do this stuff a hundred years ago?

Hope everyone is doing well, and BC and Liz, I hope you feel better soon. Me, I’m heading back for another nap. Have a good night, everyone.

suppose to be in the 70s today ;)

I saw some of the footage of the bizzard on the news yesterday but gee I didn’t know things were that bad. Ouch!

  • BeckoningChasm

Weather here looks fine, however I’m fighting a really nasty cold so I’ll probably stay indoors.

  • Ericb

In NYC we’ve gotten ice rather than snow. It’s supposed to be up to 1/4 of an inch think when it’s over. I was slipping and sliding on the way to the subway this morning.

  • The storm was pretty crazy; it was a literally thunder snow storm, with tons of lightening and everything. Wind gusts were up to 60 MPH, creating snow blind conditions (and keeping my porch constantly replenished with snow–I was clearing off four to five inches of the stuff about every hour). We even got some hail. Probably the worst blizzard year in 50 years.

Again, if the utilities keep working, no real problems. I just went out and built another leg of my escape tunnel. Luckily, I have replaced the small collapsible shovel I keep in my car with a full sized shovel a few years back, despite the fact that it’s normally too much for my little plot. Not today. Moreover, after using the big shovel to dig to the ground, I now find the smaller space is better for digging out through the wall of snow. It’s more manageable, and the smaller shovels of snow can be thrown farther.

  • BC: Glad you got home OK! Another 36 hours–whew!

I have a bit of a cold, too. We’ll see if it gets worse from being outside working all day. What I’m anticipating is when I’m as cleared as I can get, and then can take a nap. I obviously didn’t get a ton of consistent sleep last night, what what having to run out into the storm every hour.

We got pummeled on the Monday after Christmas. It took almost a week for some streets to be plowed (hell even some subway lines were out for a day or more and that almost never happens). Mayor Bloomberg caught quite a bit of heat for it. We had a bad one last week as well but they evidently learned their lessons from the last storm and we got plowed out relatively quickly

My thoughts are with you, Ken. You may be correct about the pipes: in my experience it has been the combination of cold weather plus windy conditions that has caused the pipes to freeze, so the insulation effect from the snow could be beneficial. Also- apologies if I am pointing out the obvious to you- but with the snow drifts being so high make sure your furnace doesn’t have a side wall exhaust, and that it isn’t being blocked. Be wary of carbon monoxide, in other words.

At least you have a stockpile of discs to keep you entertained, maybe even time for another review? ;)

Here’s wishing you, and everyone else affected by the storm, the best.

I suppose it’s a no brainer but when it’s cold and I watch a movie of a hot environment like a jungle I feel warmer. And when it’s hot outside I watch a film with snow and ice…

  • The Rev.

    Stay warm and safe, Ken!

We got hit with rain that turned into sleet and freezing rain here in Dallas on Monday night, topped with snow that froze solid onto said ice, leaving the roads coated in a sheet of wintry fun that pretty much shut down the area yesterday. No school, no work; we all just enjoyed a day at home. I watched Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which was absolutely retarded. I mean, it was an Asylum movie, so I didn’t expect much, but JEE-sus.

No work again today, but we had classes starting at 10 am. So of course I carefully make my way here, manage to navigate through the parking lot/ice skating rink, discover no one’s here, and find out that due to the blackouts in the area (mostly short controlled ones; I guess they’re trying to prevent a massive blackout) they decided to just forget it. Would’ve been nice if they’d told me that when I called, the bastards. Still, I got the cars cleared off and got the lady of the house to work (poor girl). I’m going to finish up a transcript, then head on home and maybe watch a movie, although I’m more likely to play some Resident Evil 4. I’ll also be making some cocoa or hot tea, I do believe.

  • Today’s weather here in the Oakland, CA area: Clear skies 65 degrees.

  • Elizabeth

We’re surviving Snowdemic: Cold and Windy pretty well here. Around 12-16 inches of snow with drifts. I saw thundersnow last night for the first time in my life!

We did our stock-up shopping Monday night, so things are cool, but the town’s pretty much shut down.

  • Rock Baker

Since The Big Freeze two years back, people in my area have been on their toes. Emergency and repair crews look like coiled cobras about to strike. And the Big Freeze put a scare into people, there’s been lot’s and lot’s of prayer since then everytime it looks like snow. Those prayers are working too. Yesterday, the area awoke to what was all but promised to be another Big Freeze, to find the accumulation of ice is only 1/10th that of The Big Freeze. Cold and icy, yes, but the power is on and the roads are clear enough to drive around. This has been a real grace of God moment.

I’m making out pretty good, really, since I got a fresh supply of firewood just days prior to the most recent cold snap. I also have a Swiss Army trench coat and some Army surpluss goggles just like the ones used by yesterday’s Monster of the Day, so I can move around outside (and feed the dog).

  • Elizabeth

Oh, and I apparently have the flu. Must’ve been lying in wait since B-Fest.

At least I’m not the only one doing nothing at all.

  • I’m holed up in my apartment, watching TV and old movies. I heard the groundhog didn’t see his shadow, predicting an early spring. For his sake, he better be right, or its groundhog burgers on the menu tonight.

  • Pip

What about MY pain? Won’t someone feel my pain? It dipped BELOW FREEZING here north of Sinton (South Texas) last night. Windy. It was awful to be out in it. I had no hat to wear.

Not feeling it yet? TRY HARDER!

  • Mr. Rational

Have been laid up sick ever since returning from B-Fest, with the downside that I still have to go to work so there’s not that much “lay-up” time. On the plus side, I’ve been able to use the time to burn through some 80’s “Twilight Zone” episodes that I’d never seen before.

I feel Pip’s pain, BTW. I know intellectually that people who are snowed over have it worse, but from here in College Station, it seems like I left Chicago weather behind on Sunday only to turn around on Monday and find that it chased me on the next flight out of O’Hare.

  • BeckoningChasm

So, Ken, Elizabeth, Mr. Rational and myself all have colds or possibly flu? And we were all at B-Fest 2011?

Isn’t this how some pretty bad zombie movies start?

  • Wow! I haven’t experienced anything like that since my last blizzard on Cape Cod. Of course, we had ’em when I lived in New York, too. Now, it’s just random power outages (with no real excuse) and no more snow for the rest of my days. Take care and don’t over-exert yourself. If it gets too cold, come and visit me in the Philippines :)

  • Mr. Rational

    BRAAAAAAAAAAAAINS.

  • Terrahawk

Definitely don’t overdo it Ken. In Northwest Ohio we got about a foot of snow with some ice. Definitely the worst snow we’ve had in about 10 years.

BTW, the village plows my driveway because I let them turn their semi around when delivering salt to the water plant. Yes, I’m rubbing it in. :-)

Wait, I’m feeling…something…yes, in my right small toe…that’s it…that’s all the sympathy for Pip.

  • The Rev.

Elizabeth reminds me that we did have thundersnow/sleet/whatever Monday night. I was awakened by a flash around 4:30 am, and as I murmured to myself that it was something else, sure enough–thunder.

I remember seeing thundersnow for the first time when I lived in Omaha. It was spooky. I love Lewis Black’s bit on it.

Ken, You don’t say how far it is to the nearest food store, but even if you have to walk, go there and stock up on basic foodstuffs ( bread, eggs, milk) plus candles ( and matches)in case the power goes out. Also a good idea to have some cans of beans, spaghetti, stew, chunky soup – anything that can be eaten right out of the can without heating if absolutely necessary. Best case scenario in a blackout: you or the neighbours have a barbecue, fire it up, and let everybody heat food on it. One time when I still lived at home, the power went out due to an ice storm, and we were totally miserable until the neighbour offered to let us boil a kettle on his barbecue. We had tea and soup ( just pour the boiling water over the contents of the can) and immediately our spirits lifted. Then my cousin came and took us to her house for the night. She only lived a few streets away, but her power was put back on hours before they got around to us.

  • VERY good advice, Sandra! Thanks!

I cannot believe we’ve had a third day of going nowhere due to the weather. Definitely not used to this after living in Dallas for years. We’ve gotten a good half foot of snow, most of that in the early morning hours, and with a lot of the ice yet to be cleared away, and our ridiculous amount of elevated highways and on/off ramps, everyone pretty much gave up by 10 am. It wasn’t that bad if you could stick to relatively flat areas, honestly, but I suppose the people here aren’t used to driving in these conditions, the poor dopes.

  • Mr. Rational

I can only assume that the reason Ken didn’t wish ME well too is because he saw my “brains” comment, and reasoned that zombies don’t GET better.

  • I figure if you survive until T(ween) Fest, I can say it then.
