Star of TV’s number one show expresses fear…

Evangaline Lilly, star of TV’s Lost, on the possibility of playing Wonder Woman in the upcoming Joss Whedon big screen adaptation: “I’ve never even spoken to anyone on the project. People have asked if I had one role I wanted to play, and I threw out Wonder Woman because she was my favorite superhero growing up. I’d love to play Wonder Woman be­cause it’s a kick-ass role. But the dilemma is whether I want to be part of something that big and commercial.”

Yes, I can see how that would be a concern.

    She’s not right for Wonder Woman. The role requires someone imposing and regal. And exotic. Lilly’s too cute and perky. And Canadian.

    The most obvious “big name” casting, as I’ve said before, is Catherine Zeta-Jones. But these days superhero movies tend to cast a relative unknown or B-lister as the hero, so…who knows.

  • I really wouldn’t be surprised if Whedon didn’t cast the woman who was the concubine in Firefly / Serenity. She can certainly pull off looking Greek.

    History has shown again and again that nature points out the folly of maaan. Oh, and that you don’t need ‘stars’ in your superhero movies. Indeed, it’s usually counterproductive. If nothing else, there’s no reason to pay a name millions of dollars that could be spent on the production side of thing.

    And Henry, obviously I agree. Look, I don’t expect actors to nakedly say, “I DON’T CARE IF THE MOVIE SUCKS, i WANT TO BE A STAR AND MAKE ZILLIONS OF DOLLARS WHEEEEE!” However, their attempts to act like that doesn’t concern them at all often makes them look even sillier than rock stars and major league athletes, who at least are usually up front about what they want.

  • If she wasn’t pushing 40, I’d say Monica Bellucci should play Wonder Woman. I’m sure there’s a 25-year-old Monica out there somewhere.

    I actually saw Whedon and the Firefly cast at comic con two years ago, when he’d just been mentioned in conjunction with Wonder Woman. At one point he said “Hmm, now where am I going to find a regal, olive-skinned brunette?” and looked pointedly at Baccarin. I agree she’d be good, but it may not be up to him.

  • I think Whedon will have a pretty good amount of pull (although he would have had more if Serentity had done better). Moreover, though, I think the studios like unknowns–or comparative unknowns–because it helps keep the budgets down.
