RIP Brittany Murphy…

A sad, sad story. Deceased at the age of 32.

Ms. Murphy was one of several zillions actresses who seemed poised for one brief second to have a really successful Hollywood career. Sadly, the movie industry is even harder on woman actors than male ones, and for every Reese Witherspoon (and what’s even she done lately?) there are a hundred Brittany Murphys.

Still, she did far better than most actresses. Her enduring legacy will be her voicing of Luanne on King of the Hill, one of TV’s all-time great sitcoms. It’s a great credit to both the show and Ms. Murphy that Luanne so transcended being just another dumb blonde. Although the characters never visibly aged on the show, Luanne grew from a silly girl to a silly but credible adult, mom and wife as the series progressed.

Ms. Murphy also had a fun role as a wild girl in the zany action flick Drive with Mark Dacascos, aka the Chairman on Iron Chef America. Sadly, that film is hard to see in this country, since the DVD is long out of print, and apparently the version released here was pretty hacked up to boot. Still, it’s a charming little film, the sort of thing you occasionally get lucky with when you return from the video store with ten genre movies and hope that one of them is actually better than your low expectations.

It’s a real shame. She was a lovely young lady and not a bad comic actress.

    It’s just too bad.

  • Aussiesmurf

Extremely sad. 2 years younger than me.

I also enjoyed Ms Murphy’s performances in Clueless (along with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the apex of teen comedies) and in Sin City.

But you’re right about the interchangability (is that a word?) of young actresses in Hollywood. At 32, bizarrely, her moment had pretty much passed. People who were ‘almost there’ for a year or two would include actresses such as Samantha Mathis, Alicia Silverstone, Denise Richards, Mira Sorvino, Mercedes Ruehl etc.

Currently Rachel McAdams is everywhere. Will she still be in these movies in five years? In three?

If Rachel Macadams keeps making carreer choice like Sherlock Holmes I can’t see it lasting.

    Rollin’ wit da homies…

    Aw, Tai.

You notice she showed up on the scene as a quirky, cuddly brunette, and then within a few years turned super-skinny and super-blonde? That’s what happens to these girls. Hollywood tells them that’s what they have to do to get ahead, and when they’ve done it, then it’s “well, now you’re just another skinny blonde chick — I got lots of those. So sorry! Oh, and good luck with the eating disorder and cocaine habit you picked up on my advice.”

Man, first Gene Barry, then Brittany Murphy, I just now heard about Arnold Stang, this has been a bad week!

  • You forgot the most ghastly part, Liz; the obligatory boob job after you get stick thin. Ick. I mean, look at Tara Reid.

But I agree. In Drive (which I know you’ve seen) Murphy was a fun, very attractive brunette. I saw recent footage of her last night, and she looked so thin it was kind of scary.

  • Aussiesmurf

I remember a quote from Cynthia Heimel about Hollywood blondes :

“If you look like that, you’re interchangeable. But if you don’t your’re invisible…’

  • Aussiesmurf

    you’re, not your’re

    Yeesh!!

I’m not so sure about this interchangeable chicks in movies thing. I can think of a number of women who achieve success who don’t follow the “wisdom”. Rachel Weisz, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly come to mind immediately. The fact that they stand out from the Studio Machine Bimbos makes them more memorable. Aside from the fanboys you won’t find too many guys posting wallpapers of mind-numbingly stupid plastic anorexic coke skanks like Megan Fox. Those bimbos fall by the wayside pretty fast.
