Monster of the Day #3521

Oops, posted this early. Consider it tomorrow’s (the 30th) MotD.

In 1959 Gene Corman, Roger’s brother, produced a low budget monster movie called Beast of Haunted Cave. It was written by Corman’s pal and regular coworker Charles B. Griffin. Two years later, in 1961 (yes, it’s right, I used a calculator), Roger decided that only chumps pay for a brand new script, so he had Griffin rework the general plot to make it an island crime / horror picture. Corman’s version is also, unsurprisingly, a bit more satirical. Both movies have great cheapie monsters, though. Of course, this one here was featured in the opening credits of the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle.

Corman’s other two films that year were the sword and sandals flick Atlas and the second of his Poe series (and possibly my favorite) The Pit and the Pendulum.

  • The Pit and the Pendulum has the best ending of the Poe series, and, I think, one of Price’s best performances.

My “best Price performances” would probably be “His Kind of Woman” as the most Price ever. Then “Witchfinder General” as the Price Could be Truly Terrifying if He Wanted to Be Award.

Honestly, though, “Witchfinder General” is the kind of film you watch when you’re about to end it all. It fits.

Tonight’s 4K feature was “Killer Klowns from Outer Space.” You’ve already seen it, you know it’s stupid, badly written, mostly badly acted (John Vernon was a treasure), and, as mentioned, dumb. The Shout Factory DVD has absolutely stunning picture and sound, which you want so you can appreciate the film’s good aspects–the really frightening clown effects, and the wonderful score. Not just the Dickie’s theme, but the awesome “March of the Klowns” (or whatever it’s really called). The Klowns and their realization are outstanding. I wonder why Tim Burton hasn’t remade this.

I mentioned before it was filmed in the county I live in and partly at the seaside amusement park where both the missus and I worked but for some reason we did not work on it. We did support with other location filming.

That is such a wonderful monster suit.

His Kind of Woman is a great Price film, with him basically playing a version of himself (he cooks a gourmet dinner at one point), and clearly having the time of his life. Really worth a watch.

It's pretty lovable. Surprisingly I haven't seen any figures of it.
