Monster of the Day #3516

After producing / directing eight films in 1957, Roger Corman took a break. He only directed five films that year, and only also produced three of those. What a slacker. (Although he also produced Night of the Blood Beast, which he didn’t direct.)

I think he spent the time he wasn’t directing two films to come up with the title for The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent. It’s definitely one of his more overtly campy flicks, including the titular Great Sea Serpent, which they obviously didn’t have the money to realize that, so they make a sock puppet. Which means it’s great.

I wonder why he chose such a lengthy title. Was he thinking there wouldn’t be room on the marquee to list a competing picture?

So, tonight I decided to watch one of the Mexico Macabre box set films. Ken touted this set back in August, and I bought it…back in August. (Sold out now, suckas!) “Black Pit of Dr. M” was the film, though Mexicans got to see it as Mysteries of the Ultra-tomb, I think.
Anyway, it looks and sounds great, the lead actress is really pretty, and it’s got tons of atmosphere. I had a hard time following it, because it kept kind of changing plots (I thought at first it was going to be “Monkey’s Paw” thing) and also because almost all the male characters looked the same. They all had little moustaches and kind of silvered semi-pompadours. Even the Love Interest, Mexican David McCallum.
Only poor Elmer bucked the crowd, and look what happened to him. Elmer was kind of the ultimate Dwight Frye role.
So, looks beautiful, sounds great (kind of grating when Christmas with Dennis tries horror), best shot ever of someone playing the violin (though I have not seen Klaus Kinski’s “Paganini” and who knows what he’s capable of). Recommended if you can find it.

The title was often shortened to Viking Women and the Sea Serpent, I think.

I think that’s the class act of that boss set, it’s a really beautiful looking film. The box set (with the box and the book and stuff) is sold out, but the component discs are available through the Powerhouse / Indicator site for only $11 each. They ship from England though so postage will add some. Look under US Editions. Get that Tod Slaughter set while it’s available.
