Monster of the Day #3498

So after Jaws the Revenge we showed a Tod Slaughter film. Because I messed up this was Maria Marten, or Murder in the Red Barn (the actual full title), which is the mildest of Slaughter’s handful of films. Of course, that’s mild for a Slaughter film, so it was still pretty great. And I expect he’ll be a regular presence at Fests in the future, since half of us own that fantastic Indicator set.

Sandy ended things up with a slam-dunk for the Texas film, Bubba Ho-Tep. I mean, Bruce Campbell playing (maybe) an elderly Elvis fighting a soul-drinking Mummy? With Ozzie Davis as the elderly JFK? If you ever want proof that we’re still a tiny portion of the population, it’s the financial failure of movies like this one.

Still, a pretty satisfying line-up of films for the Fest. And many more movies were to come….

‘Bubba-Ho-Tep’ is a classic, it sounds so goofy you’d think it would be awful but it’s a fantastic film all around. There should be a sequel where Hank Williams fights the Frankenstein Monster, Buddy Holly vs. the Gillman, or Patsy Cline vs. the Wolfman…

Watching the old Jonny Quest cartoons (which look stunning in blue-ray). There are all the old familiar voices in the cast, and in the second one (“Arctic Splashdown”) I’d swear it was Lyle Talbot doing the scientist voice at the beginning.
