Monster of the Day #3495

Arguably the two most dangerous items in Sandy’s video arsenal are the complete film sets he owns for H. G. Lewis and Al Adamson. This time it was Lewis’ turn, as Sandy decided it was time to watch the film Lewis described as “My masterpiece.” This is the vampire epic–at least in terms of length–Taste of Blood.

A businessman in Miami is sent two bottles of Brandy from England. Sadly for him, they are spiked with the blood of his ancestor, Count Dracula. The guy drinks them and turns into a vampire, whereupon he sets upon seeking out and killing the descendants of the party that killed Dracula; Van Helsing, John Seward, Quincy Morris, etc. This is actually a neat idea, although you kind of wish it was explored in a better movie.

Lewis get try on this one, hiring somewhat better actors and paying attention to things (generally) like lighting and staying in focus. The film is entirely too slow though. They could have cut out the 15 most repetitive minutes, for instance, by slashing a bunch of scenes reiterating that the Dracula guy’s wife is worried about him and that his best friend always loved the wife. Even in the scenes themselves, everyone just moves too slowly, as if to stretch out the running time.

That said, while calling this a masterpiece is ludicrous, it’s not bad overall, just slow. There are a few comic highlights, though. For instance, the guy gets Dracula’s ring, which looks like they glued a garage door opener to a finger band. And Lewis himself provides the comic highlight with a cameo appearance as Limey Seaman, providing a sure candidate for Worst British Accent in Film History. Anyway, it was worth a watch, especially for vampire completists, but it didn’t inspire me to buy the H. G. Lewis box set or anything.

That seems to be the consensus on this film–it was Lewis’ attempt to make a “good” movie, and that it’s entirely too slow.

  • I have to admit Limey Seaman does give sorta-Australian-British-floozy in From Hell it Came a run for her money.

I got my big box of Arrow stuff middle of last week and while the boys were much more interested in that second Shaw Brothers set, I did introduce Sean to the joys of Blood Feast. Hilarity ensued. Although I have to admit it’s a bit unfair watching HGL on a 75″ HDTV in an either 4K or 2K restored editions. You can see everything in a way that even the original drive-in audiences couldn’t. Some of the gore effects are actually better than I remembered (damning with faint praise, here) but the flaws are even more glaringly obvious when you can count every spray painted hair on Fuad Ramses’s head.

i also just ordered from Arrow; it’s finally been along enough that there were some new items since my last big buy (and previous small ones):

    Two Witches
    The Assassination Bureau
    Gothic Fantastico
    Rogue Cops and Racketeers
    New Fist of Fury
Hand of Death (Martial Arts one)
To Sleep So As to Dream
    Warriors Two
    The Mad Fox
    Hired to Kill

I’ve seen a grand total of one of those, including the four films in the Fantastico set.

  • Every time I think I’ve got a grasp on Horror History, a new flick pops up…

  • Beckoning Chasm

I didn’t know Arrow was having a sale, well there goes my wallet…

  • Ken_Begg

Is it still running? I bought my stuff several weeks ago.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Well, they’re having A sale. Not sure it’s the same one. The HG Lewis box is $40.

  • Yeah, it’s still the “Easter Carnage” sale, they must have a lot of overstock at the moment. I might have been poking around on there yesterday before I finially decided that I needed to watch a majority of the stuff from the two big orders I placed from there and Powerhouse before I spend more money on shelf decor.

  • Ken_Begg

I hear you, I recently made another buy from Kino as well.

  • Gamera977

Not going to even look… Barely gotten though a third of the DVDs and Blu-Rays I bought over Halloween and Black Friday and I am NOT going to buy anything new until I put a dent in them…

  • I’m trying to keep myself from paying out the nose for a multi-region Blu-Ray player, just so I can spend even more buying even more stuff from Powerhouse that is only available for the UK. I’m winning so far, but I really want that Mae West set.

  • Ken_Begg

You could always buy the Mae West set, knowing that eventually you’ll get an all region player. I did the same thing with their Creatures the World Forget set, not even a great movie, but man the set looked sweet.

  • But the I have to by the Whistler set too.

  • Ken_Begg

You’re preaching to the choir, sister.

  • Beckoning Chasm

There’s a Sony region-free model at Amazon for $150. They don’t list the model name.

  • Yes, I’ve looked at it, but I think I may spring for upgrading to to 4K UHD blu-ray at the same time, which adds another 120 bucks. I’ll get there eventually.

  • Beckoning Chasm

4K is definitely worth it. “Night of the Demons,” “Lifeforce” and “Dawn of the Dead” have never looked better.

  • Gamera977

I haven’t taken the plunge on a Region-free Blu-Ray player either. I’ve been told the one on my laptop is Region-free but I haven’t put to the test yet.
