Monster of the Day #3494

So we kicked off the 15th edition of Tween-Fest with Sandy’s choice of Daimajin, the first of three films built around a giant god statue who eventually comes to life to punish evil warlords. I haven’t watched one of these in a while, and was pleased at how good of a general production it was; costuming, sets, direction, acting, etc., all quite good. The film stands up just as a samurai drama, and then is capped by a fantastic kaiju rampage as Daimajin rather belatedly shows up to (often literally) put the boot to evildoers. Fun, fun stuff, and a really good start to the day.

I have the 3 disk set. I watched the first one when recovering from food poisoning or norovirus. Made me Queasy to think of putting it on again. I will one day, I could tell it was good.

  • Love these flicks, though I honestly thing Daimajin should have had a worthy, monstrous opponent to fight at least once.

I agree. It would’ve been great to see Daimajin fighting an opponent who was as powerful as he was.

I loved these movies. I only got to see them once or twice as a boy on the old PHL-17 station, but when I remember scenes like the one with the usurping daimyo being pinned to the wall like a bug, I can understand why. That was some strong stuff back when these films came out!
