Monster of the Day #3485

So Friday’s Watch Party subject was Destination Inner Space, a monster movie made by the guy who made Flipper and a lot of other scuba-themed projects.  It’s a classic 50s/60s monster movie in that the movie itself is pretty bland and thus the success of the projects rests entirely on who cool the monster is. In this case, the monster is *very* cool. The big grumpy faced alien aquatic monster is great. It’s probably the most successful attempt to get away from Universal’s seminal Gill Man design, and functions well in the water or on land. I’ve never seen a particularly good print of this, and there might not be one, but the slightly blurry presentation on Amazon Prime is probably as good as we’re going to get and is certainly watchable.

Hmm, the double-bill for this when released was “Frozen Alive”, a movie about cryogenics that is not about cryogenics. (According to Wikipedia, anyway.) Might also make good watch party fodder.

The suit is amazing. Kind of surprising it never showed up in another movie (to my knowledge).

Did Ho Lee and the bird meet a horrible death and I missed it?

I recall starting to watch it once. I thought it was a German film with bad dubbing and a crime story disguised as scifi.

  • If you did, so did I. He just wandered off early on and was never mentioned again AFAIK. Admittedly this is the sort of movie where I get bored and my brain wanders off whenever they go back to the “plot”. The monster stuff is first rate though.

Yeah, I watched it years ago. And remember nothing about it…

  • Killer Meteor

My memory of this was the hero struggling to get his scuba belt across his gut!

  • Rodford Smith

If that’s the bait, I don’t want to even know what they’re fishing for.
