Has anyone seen the trailer for the upcoming Godzilla x Kong The New Empire. Aside from Godzilla’s fins and atomic beam lighting up a bright pink now (as seen above), the ad features the bewildering shot of Godzilla and Kong sprinting towards the camera in slow motion, like they’re characters in a buddy cop film. Presumably seconds later they are thrown through the air when a bodega behind them massively explodes. Seriously, WTF.
Look, I haven’t hated any of these so far. Kong Skull Island was pretty good, and the rest were generally watchable (although Godzilla vs Kong was one of those movies where a quick rewrite of the script could have made a 7 out of 10 movie into an 8 out of 10 pretty easily). At least they seem to have given up on making the Millie Bobbie Brown character a ‘thing,’ although the new movie does keep her useless sidekick character, the conspiracy podcaster guy, in the mix, so…..
By the way, again, good job on killing the series characters played by Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanable. Morons. Looking at the highly anemic cast list for this one, I must say the only character I have any interest in at all is the little deaf girl from GvK who has a neat little relationship with the giant ape.
Although I don’t think these have descended into MCU or DCEU (or Star Wars or Star Trek or Doctor Who or…) awfulness, this one certainly feels like the series has hit jumping the shark territory. Worse, it will following the nearly universally praised and quite beloved Godzilla Minus One, a comparison that will not accrue any benefits to this one.
Oh, well, at least we’ll have all those other great blockbusters to watch in theaters this year.
