Monster of the Day #3425

Wednesday! Getting there.

I hope everyone is getting in the Christmas mood. I have to admit, the lack of snow in December, so different from when I was a kid, kind of makes it hard to really get there. I’ll have to bust out some of the Christmas movies on my shelf. As you’d expect, I mostly gravitate towards the hold black and white classics, such as It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, the Simms Christmas Carol, The Cheaters and The Bishop’s Wife. How about you guys?

  • Beckoning Chasm

Plus Charlie Brown Christmas, Krampus (the Michael Doherty one), Die Hard, Nightmare Before Christmas.

  • KeithB

The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Thin Man.

“Christmas in Connecticut” is my favorite that is not often in the standby list.

More Christmas fun with Miss Stanwick in “Remember the Night”. Also stars Fred MacMurray and they both live ;-)

Everything everyone has said. Except. “The Cheaters”? Guess I have new homework this Christmas.

Another less popular is “Holiday Affair” which is great to see Robert Mitchum in a Christmas movie (besides Scrooged). Bonus Janet Leigh.

  • Dorothy Cobb

I watch the 24hr A Christmas Story marathon on Xmas.

  • Beckoning Chasm

And there’s the original animated “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.”

  • Ken_Begg

Much more obscure. Used to play on WGN every year (also forgot The Lemon Drop Kid!), which is how you get hooked on Christmas movies. They they stopped playing it for years and I was bereft, until it became available on a (probably gray market) DVD.

It’s real smaltzy, but hey, it’s a Christmas movie! Also stars one of my very favorite character actors, Eugene Pallette, basically playing the same character he did in My Man Godfrey, which is a plus for me. It’s on YouTube, but sadly only in 240 P.

  • Ken_Begg

    Ah, Karloff.

  • Gamera977

    All of those are fantastic!

I like ‘The Nativity Story’, good movie and it’s got Dr. Bashir as the Archangel Gabriel…

And I watched ‘The Christmas Candle’ last year and liked it enough I picked up the Blu-Ray.

Plus I’ll probably watch ‘Earnest Saves Christmas’ just for the kicks.

And today I wrapped a bunch of presents after getting off work. Put ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians’ on for a little background noise.

    ‘HORRAY FOR SANTY CLAUS!’

And the vocal talents of Thurl Ravenscroft. “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch…”

I have nothing to say about Christmas movies, other than I do love the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol — but I have read that Williamson story ‘Spider Island’ years ago, and it’s a fun and nasty piece of work.

  • Ken_Begg

Nothing wrong with the Mr Magoo special! One of the better Scrooge adaptations, actually.
