Monster of the Day #3425

Friday! Yay! And (for some of us), the Friday leading to a four day weekend. Whee!

Watch something stupid, but still time to watch some good stuff too. For instance, Amazon Prime does now at this moment offer all four seasons of Lost in Space (as Watch Party attendees know), but also at this moment the four seasons of Wild Wild West and the fab brit TV show The Avengers. If somehow someone hasn’t seen The Avengers, I plead with you to watch the Emma Peel seasons. You will not be sorry.

In any case, have a great weekend everyone, and have a wonderful 4th.

  • Speaking of The Avengers, whenever anyone asks you who your favorite Avenger is, the correct answer is Emma Peel, as played by Diana Rigg.

If you don’t mind dvd, the Emma Peel megaset is under $22 on amazon right now.

TV critic Marvin Kitman has passed away. I’m sure we all remember the banner headline KITMAN SLAMS POLYNESIANTOWN.

  • Eric Hinkle

“He went for a little walk! You should have seen the look on his face!”

For something stupid, I’ve been trying to watch Clive Barker’s “Nightbreed,” at long last in its…sigh…two and a half hour intended version. I cannot fathom why Barker is held in the esteem in which he is held. This film is boring and willfully obscure, though it does prove that David Cronenberg can act. I’ll keep slogging through this, though. On a positive note, my 4K edition of “Lifeforce” arrived today, and it is–HOORAY!–mostly the original theatrical cut. I know some folks like the director’s cut, because “It’ll be much less terrifying if you just come to me.” Not me, though.

To really know about Clive Barker, you have to read his books. He is much like Stephen King, in that his stories do not easily translate to screen. And Nightbreed the movie is, er, something all right…

Waaaay back in the day, when Moondog’s Comics (back just at the beginning of the era of the comic book shop; this was the first one in the area and it was basically an extended closet), the guy had bought a copy of the first British edition of Books of Blood, which he pitched successfully enough that I bought it, although I was a yout and it was pretty expensive. I can’t say I was disappointed in the purchase, it was heady stuff. Weird and fantastical and gross and visceral. I can self-edit in my head (to an extent, anyway), though, and I can’t say any of his movies looked like they were my cup of tea.

Many, many decades ago I read the first three Books of Blood that were published in the US. Relying on fading memory, they were always based on a great, unique premise, but kind of turned into “and then THIS guy’s head got ripped off” rather quickly. I haven’t read any of his novels (Nightbreed is apparently based on one) but haven’t really felt compelled to, either.

I’m still watching this. You can tell when the restored footage appears, because it’s clearly from a workprint, full of dust and markings and grain. From what I can tell, it doesn’t help make the film sensible. Some very inventive makeup effects. And, uh, Danny Elfman? When Clive asked for a soundtrack, maybe you shouldn’t have just said “Here” and handed him the Batman album.

Finished it. It’s stupid and terrible.
