Stuff 12/26/08

First of all, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas.

As those with nothing better to do know, it’s possible that the release of The Watchman movie will be help up because Fox retains some rights from the period prior to when Warner’s took over the project.  Fox won the first round of court cases, and fanboys waxed indignant that this almost certain-to-disappoint epic might get delayed.

Interestingly, though, it appears possible that Fox will use the situation as leverage to get Warner’s to last sign off on a DVD release of the old Batman show.  Fox owns the shows, but Warner’s (now) owns Batman and has the rights to block any DVD release involving the character.  This is why the show has never hit home video.  I actually like this situation, as the most probably outcome is that Fox will let the Watchman release go forward while Warner’s lets Batman come out on DVD.  Fanboys still won’t be happy, however, since many of them still hate the Adam West show for making fun of comics.

Not only is there supposedly going to be a Tron.2 going into production, but both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner are set to return.

Speaking of great casts, Sylvester Stallone continues his mini career revival with an upcoming film called The Expendables, about a team of mercenaries seeking to overthrow a Southern American regime.  Co-stars will include Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture.  Meanwhile, Stallone’s old co-star Sandra Bullock (!) joins the cast as a fed hunting the team, along with fellow agent Forest Whitaker.

Stephen Chow is no longer set to direct the upcoming Green Hornet flick (worse the luck), but he will still play Kato.

Color less than surprised that Frank Miller’s hideous looking “adaptation” of The Spirit currently has a 14% positive score at Rotten Tomatoes.  It almost makes you glad that Will Eisner is dead.  The only good thing that might come of it is a DVD release of the old Sam Jones The Spirit TV movie, which wasn’t half bad.

Rocky Balboa and Ivan “I must break you” Drago in a movie again? I’m there!

The Spirit looked like Sin City 1.5, probably only worth watching on video. Saw Valkryie last night, it was not bad at all, critics were a little unfair to Tom Cruise, as big of a nutcase as he is

I hope Fox manages to release the batman show I’ve been waiting quite awhile for that to come out.

One good thing about the Spirit movie is that they’re releasing cheap best of collections of the comic. Before I had to be content with the archive books available at the Library. I’ll probably still see the movie, maybe if I turn my brain off before hand it won’t seem so bad.

An LA district court just decided Fox could distribute the Watchmen film. This should delay it for awhile. If anyone can pull of Alan Moore’s masterpiece, it is Zach Synder, so we will see

The teaser for Tron 2 was held at the San Diego Comics Con about six months ago. A few people smuggled camcorders in and posted the teaser on Youtube. You can hear the crowd gasp when the lightcycles rev up, then start cheering when Jeff Bridges shows up…. and then they go nuts when the title appears (and if I’d been there, I’d be cheering right along with them).

Since Disney was the one bringing this teaser in, it looks official: Tron 2 is finally gearing up. YES!

Saw The Spirit last night, and all I can say is I really hope the comics were nothing like it. It’s a mess in every possible way. A friend of mine commented that if you strip away the special effects, it plays like an Ed Wood movie. I really can’t argue with that, except that Ed Wood movies have a kind of dememnted charm, where the film just tries so hard and doesn’t seem to realize that it’s failing miserably. The Spirit seems more like a movie where nobody really knows what they’re doing or why they’re there, and it just feels confused and disjointed.

I know you’ve got a lot on your plate already, Ken, but this one may actually be Jabootu worthy.

Looks like ghost of Eisner might be getting the last laugh after all, The Spirit debuted at number nine with little over ten million dollars on 2509 screens.
