Monster of the Day #3362

Mr BIG returned to form with his one sequel, War of the Colossal Beast, sort of a mash-up of Amazing Colossal Man and The Cyclops. There’s a really good remastered copy on YouTube, for those who want to give it a look. Clocking in at a lean 69 minutes (including flashbacks from the first film), the script is obviously streamlined. The sets look cheap, but the melancholy tone of the first film is maintained, and it must be said that the f/x work, especially the traveling mattes, are far more accomplished than in the previous year’s ACM. Mr. Gordon was working his butt off in 1957 and 1958, but it must be said that his films were (on their limited scale) definitely getting better.

I watched ‘The Amazing Colossal Man’ over the weekend. I’m not sure I’d even call it a bad movie. It was a pretty solid film. The only times I’d watched it before was the MST3K version so it was a shock how good it was without the riffing.

I’ve been meaning to watch ‘War of the Colossal Beast’ but haven’t had the time yet.

  • War of the Colossal Beast, like most of B.I.G.’s output, is okay. You could do worse with your time.

I always thought that ‘Amazing Colossal Man’ was a decent film of its type. Same with ‘The Crawling Eye’, which has some genuinely creepy moments in it.

    It has that “surprising” ending.

  • A real shocker.

Just watched it. I liked it. Not as good as ‘TACM’ but still a good film.

  • It’s a rare B.I.G flick that’s actively bad. They never hit the heights other director’s hit, but his films were worth while.
