Monster of the Day #3356

Bert I Gordon (aka Mr. BIG) worked the giant monster genre like few others. Although some of his films have their good qualities, the fact is that many of them are poorly written and with substandard special effects. That said, and this must always be acknowledged, making films, especially back in the day and sans the resources of a studio behind you, was really, really hard. Mr. Gordon made dozens of films over the course of decades–often working with his wife and eventually his kids–and while the films themselves are fair game, I can understand his frustration and anger at being turned into a subject of mockery for a generation of MST3K-watching smart asses who lived in a world of safety and luxury built by his generation.

All that said, his first film, King Dinosaur, is pretty awful. In a good way, but still. If you ever have the chance to talk to Sandy Petersen about it, he will relate how watching this film as a kid made him realize for the first time that there could be a bad monster movie.

  • Yeah, that’s kind of the conundrum of the Mst3k approach: on one hand, hard work and dedication is being mocked and held up to ridicule, but then on the other that same work is kept alive and gets to be seen and potentially appreciated by an enormously expanded audience.

On another note, revisited ‘Tormented’ recently, and I have to say: little Sandy Gordon was a fine actress.

Yeah, I wonder how many ‘serious’ movies have been lost in the sands of time. As Cobra says Gordon’s movies might be watched by people making fun of them but they are watched, and remembered fondly even if maybe for the wrong reasons.

Though I think if Gordon had the actor call the enlarged monitor some sort of quadruped dinosaur it might be less joked about than calling it a T. rex, which even elementary school kids knew was a biped. Although I’ll grant ‘OMG IT’S A T.REX!!!’ does sound more impressive than ‘OMG IT’S A GIANT PREHISTORIC MONITOR LIZARD!!!’.

Wow, Lippert. Gordon, and Gries. Nuke the island, it is the only way to be sure.

I will challenge that “in a good way” modifier.

  • MST3K was never my bag. Oh, I’ll bad mouth a movie while watching it, and the Watch Parties are great fun because of this. I never really clicked with the show itself.

To maybe underscore my point, my favorite MST3K is the one on Hobgoblin. The trio break done about midway through and try to escape the theatre. This tickled me to no end as I watched that bad terrible boy all the way through no problems at all.

Which… might not say good things about my viewing habits…

Reportedly, Gordon himself thought so little of KING DINOSAUR that he didn’t even keep a copy of it for his personal collection. He liked to consider THE CYCLOPS as his first ‘real’ movie.

  • I can’t actually sit down and watch King Dinosaur anymore. The actual lizards, actually fighting, and actually getting hurt sucks the fun out of it for me.

And one of the male leads is really rough with his lady co-stars.
