Not a great deal of stuff, but film buffs will want to check out the new 2-disc Criterion Collection release of The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, probably the greatest of the anti-Bond, deconstructionist spy films. However, the Jabootu buff will want to see it because it contains perhaps Richard Burton’s finest screen performance.
You can’t really appreciate bad movies unless you appreciate great ones, and you can’t really appreciate how epically bad Burton was in pictures like Bluebeard until you see just how brilliant he was capable of being. And then there’s the fact that this is just a great movie. Check it out.
Criterion is also releasing DVDs for Chungking Express and Wes Anderson’s first movie, Bottle Rocket, today.
Genre fans will want to check out the hard to see ’70s flick Psychic Killer, starring the usually amiable Jim Hutton. The disc is from the fine folks at Dark Sky. Amazon has but a teeny discount on it, though, so shop elsewhere.
