Although not among the very best isekai (transported to another world) animes, Overlord is right up at the top of the second tier, I think. And if not the best one, it’s nonetheless my favorite. Many younger anime fans love it but heavily criticize the sometimes jenky CGI. Although I am known as a cranky sourpuss on CGI, that’s mostly in films. I’ll admit the CGI generally doesn’t measure up to Overlord’s hand drawn animation. However, as you guys are aware, impeccable special effects are now my number one priority in my media. Overlord’s brilliant world building alone overwhelms any slight qualms I might have about some of it’s GCI. (I will admit the CGI can undercut some of the ‘bigger’ moments, but again, not my priority with the show.)
Anyway, the previously announced fourth season of Overlord has finally been confirmed for a 2022 release. I’m assuming it will come out in either the July or September seasons, I would think the latter. However, time runs swiftly and those dates are not really that far in the offing. Plus after the season is offer they will be releasing an Overlord movie, which I really hope makes it over here theatrically, even if just for a day. Surely the huge success of the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie will help make that happen.
If I were to suggest one anime to non-anime watchers–well, it would probably be Demon Slayer, as that’s proved itself with it’s massive success. Right on its heels would be Overlord, though. A ‘season’ of the show is only 12 episodes, so we’re taking like four hours a season. Not a hard watch to catch up on. Sadly, only season 1 is still available on Hulu–although that would certainly give you a taste of what the show’s like. Again, you could easily binge the show in a weekend, and it’s on both Funimation and Cruchyroll, both of which offer free trial periods long enough to get that job done.
