Monster of the Day #3272

It’s nearly October, and time to start planning your Halloween viewing. I like to start old school. And you don’t get much better than this. If you haven’t seen it, or seen it in a while, check it out again, it’s pretty great.

    round up the usual suspects

  • That poster makes it almost look like a detective story.

In any case, I’ve tried watching this and failed. I know it’s a classic, but something about it does nothing for me.

  • Ken_Begg

Sorry to hear that. I love that movie. Not my favorite, but it’s really great. It might have helped that I’ve probably seen in a theater half a dozen times.

Not recently. Even when they bring back ‘vintage’ films now, they are overwhelmingly from the ’70s on.

  • I never once said I had good taste…

I can see why it’s a classic, but I just can’t sit through it. Phantom of the Opera I have the same problem with. I keep trying every now and again, but….

I hadn’t seen it till last night. Not sure why, just never got around to it. There’s a beautifully cleaned-up copy on YouTube at Cult Cinema Classics. This will probably rankle purists but I set it to a playback speed of 1.25 which IMHO makes it more watchable.

  • Ken_Begg

Nah, people like what they like. Try Cat and the Canary (1929), it moves really well for a silent.

  • Ken_Begg

No, there are silent films I’ve watching at a sped up rate, although I admit it makes me a bit of a philistine. I’d say the only horror title I’d give that treatment to is Hands of Orlac, which I finally saw several years ago and was massively disappointed by. The stately paces of Caligari and Nosferatu, though, lend them their dreamlike feel, although I’ll admit that’s a personal preference.

  • I think I did. I know I did the Bob Hope one (very good.)

The Bat, now, that was fun.

  • Gamera977

Well, I’d rather watch as the movie was intended to be watched. And I appreciate the dreamy quality. But as I got to the 45 min mark I just wanted it to move on and get to the end. So I’m just throwing that out as an option.

  • Ken_Begg

Yes, the Hope version is great. He hadn’t really gotten completely into his comic coward persona yet, and actually acts fairly hard boiled at times.

  • Did anyone here watch the 1960s remake? If so, was it any good?
