This week on DVD (08/26/08)…

A bit late, but here we go.

Fat Albert’s Halloween Special Looking for something different to watch on Halloween?  Hey, hey, hey, here’s your chance.

Other TV sets include Dirty Jobs Collection 3; Dog the Bounty Hunter Best of S4; Entourage S4; Everyone Hates Chris S3; Heroes S1 (Blu-Ray); Heroes S2 (regular & Blu-Ray); NCIS S5; Nip/Tuck S5; One Tree Hill S5 (Wait, One Tree Hill was on for five seasons?!); Prison Break S3; The Untouchables S2, Vol. 2.

The disc of the week is The Three Stooges Collection Vol 3, the third of the simply essential remastered chronological sets of Stooges shorts.  This set includes 23 shorts, among the best stuff the Stooges ever did.  Amazon is selling it for 32%, at only $17.  A real bargain.

And don’t forget this upcoming gem:

Other stuff:

Bloody Moon –It the combination of ‘1981,’ ‘slasher movie’ and ‘Jess Franco’ makes your pulse increase, then this disc is for you.  If not, maybe this will tip the scale; it supposedly includes lots of bad disco music.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: Director’s Cut – I actually like the original cut of this films, which is like The Name of the Rose with more monsters and martial arts action.  It also co-stars the guy from Iron Chef America.

Cannibal Holocaust Deluxe Edition. Maybe it doesn’t include the film.  (Did you see what I did there?)  But I kid.  It does sound like a pretty pumped edition, including a commentary, documentaries, and all that good stuff.

Delicatessen Special Edition Maybe it doesn’t include a copy of Cannibal Holocaust.  Anyway.  This is the politically charged Euro horror flick that’s been a fave with the arthouse crowd for some time now.

Devil Hunter More Jess Franco!  What amazing times we live in.  This is basically Franco’s take on…three guesses…Cannibal Holocaust.  Hmm, there’s something in the air.

How The West Was Won  Somewhat stolid but interesting, insanely-star studded ’50s Western shot in Cinemascope and starring, well, everybody.
In regular and Blu-Ray editions.

In the Folds of the Flesh Supposedly the most over-the-top Giallo ever.  Which would be saying something.

Last House on the Beach Sleazy Euro “Last House on the Left” knock-off. I know, what gave it away?

Legend of the Lone Ranger Now we’re talking. Notorious bomb movie remake of the venerable old TV show.  The cause of the whole retarded lawsuit against Clayton Moore that made him legally the only person in America who couldn’t wear a Lone Ranger mask in public.

Linda Lovelace for President  I remember the Playboy issue that covered this soft-core ‘comedy. Since it’s a comedy, I’m sure it’s awful.  Mickey Dolenz (!) is in it.

Nightmare Before Christmas Collector’s Edition Utterly packed new edition, both regular (see link below) and Blu-Ray.

Phantasm IV: Oblivion  More antics of the Tall Man and his shiny orb.

Redbelt  Martial arts flick directed and written by David Mamet (!).  That sounds interesting.

Salo: Or The 120 Days Of Sodom: Criterion Collection  I think this is what Bob Guccioni was shooting for when he produced Caligua.  I don’t think that one will be coming out from Criterion, though.

  • How The West Was Won was actually shot in Cinerama, not ‘scope, meaning that each shot required three cameras working in sync. Just a nitpick.

  • Yes, that’s correct. Good call. The image was gigantic, and generally required three standard screens put side to side because the image was so broad.

This made the film highly unsuitable for television, but today’s large TVs should handle it fine.

  • KeithB

On the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea DVD they include a Donald Duck short with it. This short was also filmed in Cinerama so at one point the Disney Ranger is taking a group photo and says “Spread out folks, this is cinerama!” and they spread out to the sides of the screen.

(Well, I thought it was funny.)

I had never seen or knew anything about “Last House on the Left” when it came on cable TV one night and my wife and I started watching it.

We were not shocked by the violence but, the sudden realization that it was a re-make of Bergman’s “Virgin Spring.” I still in shake my head over that one.

“Strange Brew” being based on “Hamlet” does not seem as strange.

Cannibal Holocaust: “Maybe it doesn’t include the film.”

    Zing!
CH is a weird film for me… I will never, EVER watch it, but I like reading articles and reviews and stuff about it… weird, huh? The same goes for Salo, which you have further down

Delictessen: “This is the politically charged…”

Politically charged? Really…? I don’t recall it being terribly political…
Damn, I got this for my bro-in-law a few years ago… I should have waited… Ah, well..

    Nightmare Before Christmas:

Could you please put a link to this, so I can buy it through you? It might have to wait till next week, but if you put a link, I will totally use it. Thanks!

  • Re: Nightmare Before Christmas. Regular or Blu Ray?

  • lyz

The awful disco music is a temptation, granted, but Bloody Moon also contains a real (and completely gratuitous) snake killing. Otherwise I’d be on it like Oprah on a baked ham.

Ken asked: “Re: Nightmare Before Christmas. Regular or Blu Ray?”

    Regular, please. Thanks!

  • I should note again that if anyone hits *any* of my links, they don’t need to buy that specific item, but anything they buy after traveling through my link gets credited to me.

On the other hand, they do track my click/sale percentage for the use of that link, so it doesn’t hurt to use a direct link either. I just don’t think it’s essential. That said, I’d be glad to add a link to a specific item anytime people are interested.

Ken sad: “I should note again that if anyone hits *any* of my links, they don’t need to buy that specific item, but anything they buy after traveling through my link gets credited to me.”

I was aware of that, and even briefly considered just using another link. Though I did seem to recall (incorrectly?) that you get more money with a direct “click/sale”, which is why I didn;t do that and asked for a direct link instead. Ah, well…

I ordered Nightmare a few moments ago! Yayz! Thanks, Ken!

  • Are you kidding? Thank you!

By the way, if someone would just buy that solid gold rocket car from Amazon, I could work on this site full time.
