Monster of the Day #3242

If you’re looking for something legitimately spooky to watch on Amazon Prime, they currently offer a pretty good slate of Asian ghost movies, as well as often the American remakes thereof, including the surprisingly solid The Ring. You might want to skip those sequels, though. On the other hand, Rings looked awful. Interesting awful or boring awful, I can’t say, but it sure looked dumb.

Oh, that still is from Ju-On the Grudge, and the American The Grudge is also available. Now if they would just offer more of the old school Ghost Cat movies.

What’s everyone’s favorite film that fell into this once surprisingly popular mini-genre?

  • Beckoning Chasm

Honestly, I thought the American version of The Ring was kind of dumb. The horse scene just ruined it for me.

  • Gamera977

I’ve seen both Japanese films but not the Hollywood remakes. Just not a big fan of remakes, though to be honest I do prefer the 1959 ‘Ben-Hur’ remake over the earlier silent version.

‘Ju-On’ is a great horror film but the lack of a resolution did seem a little odd to my Western sensibilities.

‘Ringu’ is awesome. But as Ken said the sequels are pretty friggin’ awful. I think I remember Ken griping about corny ‘scientific’ explanations in films. The second and third ‘Ringu’ movies replace the curse with a artificial virus. Yeah, a virus cooked up by a teen-age girl with no training in biology or genetic engineering nor a lab or any type of scientific equipment. The scientific explanation makes soooooooo much more sense than it just being a friggin’ curse (sigh)…

  • I’m partial to Cursed (Chô’ kowai hanashi A: yami no karasu to set it a part from the thousand or so movies titled Cursed) It’s about a haunted convenience store where if what you buy equals the right amount you get marked for death by the spiritual inhabitants of the place. It’s a lot like an anthology film with a central theme.

Then there’s the film that hooked me on Japanese Horror, Ghost Actress/Don’t Look Up. Directed by the guy who did Ringu, it’s the story about a dead actress haunting a film crew. Hard to find this one, though I think YouTube might have a copy.

  • The Grudge scared me a lot. Good show.

Not quite a ghost film, but I recommend TAG.

    Cursed was pretty good, too.
