Monster of the Day #3238

Yay, Friday!

The Night of the Ghouls has a typically crazy history for an Ed Wood film. It was completed in 1959 but they couldn’t afford to pay the lab bill after having the master print processed. So the film was held in hock Finally Wade Williams (of the Wade Williams collection, an early line of  DVDs releasing gorgeous prints of cheesy ’50s sci-fi and horror film) got the rights and it was released to home video in 1984.

I’ve seen this one, and while I don’t remember much, I recall it being kind of dull. Unfortunately, aside from “Plan 9” and “Bride of the Monster” I kinda think that’s true of most of Wood’s films–more dull than fun.

I have to wonder if Criswell predicted the movie would sit around in a drawer twenty-five years before it was released…

Looking at Criswell’s entry in the IMDB under trivia:

In a 1955 issue of Spaceway Science Fiction, Criswell predicted that Mae West would be elected U.S. President in 1960 on a pro-space travel platform and fly to the moon with Criswell and friend George Liberace five years later.

WHY CAN’T I LIVE IN THAT REALITY!!?!?!?!

    Quick, call Tim Powers!

It’s shame this one didn’t go into release. While it might not’ve made much money, it does show some slight improvement in Wood’s directing abilities. Had he continued to make comparatively mainstream movies like this he might’ve eventually found his stride, but this marked the end of his potential in ‘real’ movies aside from a few screenplays.
