Sorry about skipping Friday, I got into holiday mode early. Godzilla Singular Point has been watched, and I remain satisfied. I understand anyone who felt differently, though. You’d have thought we were building up to massive action scenes with Godzilla (finally fully evolved) fighting the military and other monsters, and we didn’t get that. GSP was basically a Lovecraftian mystery series with the Toho monsters filling in for Lovecraft’s pantheon.
Godzilla, needless to say, was the Cthulhu analog. He was so powerful at the end that he literally threatened the destruction of Earth, so ironically there wasn’t much you could do with him. I still liked the show quite a bit. Let’s hope for a season two. Maybe they can scale the Big G back some and go more traditional with him. Still, although I do think you can’t just have monsters on screen constantly–and that would be insanely expensive if you did (or cause you to cut corners animating it, which would defeat the purpose), I can see people being disappointed by the Gareth Edwards approach, at least as far as Godzilla himself is concerned.
Still, an often gorgeously animated, fun and smart show. I wouldn’t rank it up there with Super Cub or Shadows House as my favorite animes of the spring season, but I’d certainly give it a thumb’s up.
