Monster of the Day #3668

Ghost Rider, pick on people your own size. You’re kind of being a dick.

Watch Party tonight! Wheeee!

I saw Nosferatu yesterday, luckily before it left theater. I would have used that as MotD, but stills of Bill Skarsgard’s Orlock are still not circulating on the Interwebs, which is pretty amazing. There are misdirect (official, unofficial?) pics of him wearing a traditional Nosferatu look. Orlock has been redesigned, though (hopefully that doesn’t represent a spoiler), but is equally creepy. You can definitely see what they were going for. Anyway, I thought the film was magnificent.

Today I go to see the latest work of another great auteur in theaters. It’s The Colors Within, an anime film by my favorite anime director, Naoko Yamada. She directed such acclaimed films as The Silent Voice and Liz and the Bluebird, which I particularly love. She also worked on many of the great Kyoto Animations series before eventually leaving the studio following the horrible massacre there. Most important to me, she made her bones as a young director on K-On!, K-On!! and K-On the Movie, which I love deep, deep in my bones. K-On! as a franchise is up there to me with Godzilla and early Marvel comics. Anyway, her new film is in theaters for a week, and although I know most of you aren’t interested in anime, I’d still suggest. I’m not exaggerating when I call Ms. Yamada one of the great filmmakers working today.

anime I am watching on Netflix right now is the Ranma 1/2 update and "Mob Psycho 100". I was watching "Saiki K" funny but it gets kinda too crazy.

I just started (finally) watching Beastars on Netflix, which is complete in three seasons. Oddly, it' covers some of the same philosophical ground as Zootopia, albeit in rather deeper fashion.

Netflix occasionally has a good new anime (by my lights), as with Blue Box right now. But man, they are raising prices again. I don't know. I don't really watch that much Netflix.

Yes, I finished the Columbian produced Pablo Escobar series and now I am wondering if we really need Netfilix.

I hope you like Beastars. I've read the manga myself.

If you ever want some more anime/manga like Beastars you can check out the anime Brand New Animal, which has some surprising turns for people used to modern American animation, and the fun manga Tamamo-chan's a Fox, which is a comedy and a fun one with a few deeper moments.

It's been pretty great so far. This one I'm kind of enjoying being able to watch all at once rather than over five years or whatever.

Odd Taxi on Crunchyroll is another Beastars like show (with humanoid) animals, and I've heard that one is tremendous. Still stuff for me to catch up on.

  • I haven't finished it yet, but Mob Psycho 100 is excellent.

I'll keep my eyes open for Odd Taxi. I've also seen mangas for the more fairy-tale like 'Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts', which is pretty good.
