Monster of the Day #3233

I’ve opined before that I prefer Bert I Gordon’s Earth vs the Spider to the more generally respected Universal’s Tarantula. This scene right here is a good example. While Jack Arnold’s Tarantula lurks in the desert for the whole film, this one comes into town and wreaks havoc there. I like the cave dwelling of the Spider, and the scene where it’s revived by rock ‘n roll music is hilarious. Plus Arnold Ziffel’s dad is in the movie.

I’m sure we all have these. What cheaper knock-off film would you argue is actually better than the more famous film it’s aping?

That’s a good question…usually I like a film just because I like it, and I’m not really thinking about whether it’s a ripoff or not.

Besides, the only people really making ripoffs today are the folks at The Asylum, and their movies are just terrible in every way.

  • Gamera977

Personally? Though I might mark me as a heretic I like ‘The Last Starfighter’ better than any ‘Star Wars’ movie.

I don’t demand that every character be just like me to identify with them but still I like Alex Rogan. I can identify with a kid that grows up poor, has to support his mom and little brother, plays video games to relax and just wants to get away. More so than Luke Skywalker with his super magic powers (what else is The Force) and whose dad is a knight his sister a princess and has a whole prophecy written about him.

I just love how the kids in this movie decide that the best place for their hootenanny is right beside the ‘dead’ giant spider.

  • Gamera977

Oh, and I guess it goes without saying that I like Gamera movies better than Godzilla ones…

  • Ken_Begg

Yes! Man, I’d leave the room if there were a regular tarantula in there, much less that one.
