Monster of the Day #3229

I don’t think I had even ever heard of this one. It’s Animal from 2014. I saw a clip on YouTube, and who knows how good it is. But…I’m pretty sure from what I saw the monster was actually a guy in a suit, and that’s pretty great. I wouldn’t be surprised if they used CGI in some shots, but even if they did, the fact that they went to the hassle of having a suit made and putting an actor in it and thus having a monster would could actually physically interact with the other actors is marvelous. Good on you, guys.

OT but with what I’ve heard about the ‘Cruella’ movie, I suspect that it will one day be featured on this and so many other bad movie sites. Just, wow, the reviews I’ve been seeing. For instance, we learn that Cruella hates Dalmatians because they killed her mother. Yes, seriously.

The whole Disney trend towards making sadistic, narcissistic, monstrous villains of films past into heroes also seems kind of creepy.

Animal? So he’s not playing the drums anymore?

Creepy is a word, a good word, but my choice of word is perverted. It’s a perversion of things that were once accepted now being torn down so creepy is a relief compared to the what they are dishing out.

Frankly (and I know this will surprise no one), I was turned off by a CGI shot in the trailer. If you haven’t seen it, Cruella is basically the Michelle Pfier Batwoman Meets Devil Wears Prada. I mean, that seems 98% of it, with the Dalmations being the other two percent. So she makes her grand statement (in the trailer) at a gala bash by walking in with a dress that she then sets ablaze. It’s crepe or something and burns instantly dramatically revealing another dress underneath. This is achieved through CGI. Maybe that’s the only way they could have done it, but man, it would have been soooo much cooler if they actually had stage magicians working on how to do it as a practical effect. It just seemed lazy, and I HATE super expensive lazy movies. You have all those resources, know what to do with them!

I watched The Critical Drinker’s review of it yesterday and it did not look good. I found it interesting in the comments that some critics were comparing it to the Joker movie. I didn’t see it but wasn’t the whole point of the Joker film that he was a screwed-up pathetic loser?

If I were a Batman villain I’d be at least a cool one like the Penguin.

Going from what I’ve seen and read, it could have worked as some sort of commentary on the evils of revenge, with Cruella ending up being just as cruel, petty, and narcissistic as the woman she destroys (which is in fact what happens to her in the movie). But apparently we’re supposed to see her as a rule-breaking cool badass.

Thing is, I read a book aimed at teens some months about about Cruella that made her into a somewhat pitiable figure while still keeping her villainy front and center. Her mother made her life hell, but Cruella was still a nasty piece of work. Like a similar one about Prince Hans from ‘Frozen’ which pointed out that he’d been horribly abused — and it didn’t justify any of the horrible things he did.

Maybe the new Disney figures that the idea of ‘villains can deserve pity while still being awful people who deserve to lose’ is too difficult for kids. Or to be more cynical, maybe the people working at Disney right now think that encouraging young girls to grow up into someone like Cruella is just fine if it gets you what you want.
