Monster of the Day #3086

Amazingly, all the other cheapies I’ve showcased this week had theatrical releases back in the day, many of them highly profitable ones. (Partly because the films were so cheaply made.) However, there was also the even cheaper direct to video slashers that were even grainier and somehow often even dumber. Take Fred Olen Ray’s Scalps, a supernatural slasher that is super grainy, especially in the night scenes, and make no damn sense at all. Take this lion-faced guy that shows up in the beginning of the movie–because nothing says American Indian culture like lions–and causes a guy to commit suicide at long distance and then never shows up again.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

“Fred Olen Ray” and “dumber” kind of go together.

  • You beat me to it 😂

So it’s not from the theatrical version of ‘The Lion King’???

That reminds me of the great ‘Death Curse of Tartu’ where the Seminole medicine man transforms himself into a number of dangerous creatures of which half aren’t even native to the Everglades. I mean there aren’t enough dangerous critters in Florida (gators, rattlesnakes, the skunk ape) that you have to add stuff from around the world?!?

This is one of the few remaining ’80s slashers I haven’t seen yet, so I really don’t know much about it, except that there’s a threat of a sequel in the end credits that never materialized, unless you count a short fan film someone apparently made in 2007.

I’ve never seen ‘Scalps’ but I heard it’s kind of unforgettable. Screenshots like the above help to explain why.

He only shows up briefly? Pity. A slasher about a killer fursuiter would have some weird entertainment value.

They go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dumb dumb.

  • Ken_Begg

That’s Girls Nite Out I believe.

  • Eric Hinkle

Wow. I thought you were kidding and making that up until I went and searched for the title.

  • The Rev.

Proceed with caution. It’s pretty bad even for a slasher movie. Although the costume’s so stupid-looking that it’s good for a laugh or two.
