Monster of the Day #3076

Yesterday I featured the recent killer gator movie Crawl, which is available on both Hulu and Amazon Prime. Maybe you’d like to pair that one with a more old school example though. Prime has been, er, snapping up a multitude of killer gator/croc and shark movies, dozens of them. Most, obviously, are recent movies with CGI beasties, the main sin of which is that they move way too damn fast and thus clearly lack the mass of a giant critter. The second sin of them is that giant prop monsters are just cooler. Don’t argue with me, it’s Science. So if you have Prime and want to watch Crawl and another flick, try The Great Alligator, a really cheesy (gee, who’d thought) Italians Jaws rip-off from 1979. Ah, that’s the stuff.

And the see-through shirt on the actress had no impact on this pick? :-)

Well, I was looking at the gator.

    Really.

Have I lied on this site?

    Recently???

  • Gator?

  • To be slightly off topic, Amazon Prime also has A Chinese Ghost Story (#1-#3) and The Seventh Curse. In case you still haven’t had your fill of rubber monsters…

Ah thanks!!! I watched a copy of ‘A Chinese Ghost Story I’ on YouTube a year ago but the video quality was horrible.

A bit of giant alligator story trivia. An episode of _Thunderbirds_ (I believe from the second season) had a swamp home being menace by alligators enlarged by the efforts of the scientist renting the place to perform experiments. The “giant” alligators were played by real but actually juvenile alligators, which did a convincing job of tearing up the miniature set.

  • Just rewatched it myself. The subtitles, I think, are worse than the one on my long lost DVD copy. But it’s worth it. Great flick.
