Monster of the Day #3074

Time to help a brother out. BChasm writes:

“Hi Ken, attached is a picture of Satan, from the 1985 film “The Adventures of Mark Twain,” directed by Claymation pioneer Will Vinton. Mr. Vinton’s other credits include the Oscar winning short “Closed Mondays” (1974) and the excellent Claymation effects in “Return to Oz” (also from 1985).

So far as I can tell, it’s still available on DVD and Blu-Ray, but not on any streaming service…

…except on YouTube, where there’s an extract called “Creepiest Scene from Any Kid’s movie” which includes Satan’s entire appearance. It is indeed very creepy and disturbing, but my main reason for submitting the image is that, while I’ve watched the clip a number of times, IT KEEPS SHOWING UP as a recommendation, like the Old Man of the Sea.

Maybe, by submitting Satan as a MotD, it’ll STOP showing up. And I can go back to getting my usual recommendations about “5 Terrifying Things That Will Show up As Soon As the Lights Go Off–part 5.”

  • Vinton also created the California Raisins.

    Thanks Ken!

It really is quite creepy, and very nihilistic…kind of in keeping with Twain’s very cynical view on life. Plus, Satan’s voice is portrayed by two people (male and female) speaking simultaneously.

YouTube since the revamp has been pushing the same stuff over and over here too. The older version rarely did this.

Thanks BC, I’ll have to check this out. So far the most frighting thing I’ve seen on YouTube is that bleeping Sasquatch Soap ad that pops up every time I watch anything. Not only is it friggin’ annoying but the main ad is about five minutes long. When it pops up two or three times on a ten minute ad it’s just too bleeding much.

  • This section of film is quite excellent. Too bad I find the rest of the film so boring. I can’t even sit through the first five minutes. So very. Very. Dull.

  • Which are pretty evil in themselves….

I saw that movie on TV years ago. Aside from a brief joke involving Twain tossing the Paige Typesetter off his airship — “I should’ve done this years ago”, and a bit of the Garden of Eden segment, this is all I remember. Evil just seems to ooze all through that segment of the film and it made one of the creepiest cinematic takes on Satan I’ve ever seen.

I remember ‘Return to Oz’. It’s such a delightfully creepy movie. Especially their take on the Nome King, who was one of the most affable monsters I can remember from a kid’s movie.
