Monster of the Day #3064

More of this, please. The Cult Cinema Classics channel on YouTube has posted the entire serial the Phantom Creeps, which stars Bela Lugosi as a crazy mad scientist. That’s his killer robot, so you know you’re in for a treat. Amazon also just posted the serial The Vanishing Shadow, and if you’re already paying for Prime, the advantage is that it’s easier to watch a chapter at a time. Amazon has several serials posted, including the epically goofy Undersea Kingdom. I’m pretty happy that things like this are getting out there.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Yeah, I’m glad they’re out there, but I’ve never been much of a serials-guy. Seems to me the plot generally goes “guy goes to a strange place, gets captured, escapes, gets captured, escapes, gets captured, escapes, etc.” Either that or villain does things, heroes almost get him, he escapes, does villainy, heroes almost get him, he escapes, does villainy, etc.”

  • I love this robot! Phantom Empire is probably my favorite serial, just from watching it on Matinee at the Bijou back in the day. Although Zorro’s Black Whip (Zorro’s a GIRL!) is up their too.

But I do have to separate watching episodes, just because of the repetitive nature of the genre, and helps a little with the great escape that doesn’t in any way resemble the situation the hero looked to be in at the end of the last episode. They don’t binge too well for me.

I bet it was hot in that thing.

  • Gamera977

Well to be honest who wouldn’t want a giant robotic Don Rickles?!?

  • GreenLuthor

How fortunate. This will simplify everything.

  • Eric Hinkle

    “You! Human! Hockey! Puck!”

  • Eric Hinkle

That’s the killer robot? I admit, that face doesn’t make him look like the party robot.

Oh yes, I watched Super Inframan on Prime because it was recommended here. I was promised a madhouse of a film and I was not let down. Thank you, everyone.

  • Ken_Begg

Ah, your first look at Super Inframan! I enjoy you.

  • I am super jealous of anyone getting to experience that for the first time.

  • Eric Hinkle

‘Enjoy’ or ‘envy’? If the latter, then thanks.

Now there’s an idea for an entry on the site: what other movies belong to the ‘I envy anyone seeing this for the first time’ category?

  • Eric Hinkle

    It’s a trip, that’s for sure!

And turns out I did see part of it, once, decades ago on ‘Shock Theater’. But all I remembered was the fight between Inframan and the Spider Monster.

  • The Rev.

Ship of Monsters for sure. I’d probably also say Seventh Curse.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve seen Ship of Monsters — such glorious madness — but I’ve never even heard of Seventh Curse before. I’ll look for it on YouTube and Amazon Prime.

  • The Rev.

It may also be under the title Dr. Yuen and Wisely. It’s just a really fun one-damn-thing-after-another Hong Kong film. If you liked The Story of Ricky, you should like this; it’s the same director.

  • Eric Hinkle

I wouldn’t know about The Story of Ricky, as I’ve never seen that movie.
