[UPDATED] Monster of the Day #3055

If you have an hour and change this weekend, you could many worse ways to spend it then watching AIP’s enjoyable meta How To Make a Monster.  The cameos at the end of the film are fantastic, although ultimately horrifying, considering how things end. Free to watch on YouTube.

UPDATE: Although YouTube does have a watchable print, it turns out Amazon Prime has a pristine one for viewing right now. If you have that option, go for it.

If it’s the ending I’m thinking of, remember, no one back then thought about collector’s items or historical value. They were there to draw teenagers into theatres and, after that, they were no longer useful.

So, yes, it is a shame but it was a different world back then.

We’re lucky people like Forry Ackerman and Bob Burns dug as much props and other FX items out of dumpsters as they did .

  • Beckoning Chasm

Oh I agree. But they were pretty much the only ones…unless the studio was big (MGM, eg) and saw props they could reuse down the road (everything in Forbidden Planet, eg).

  • I just saw this for the first time about two weeks ago and it ain’t too bad. I never pictured Beulah as red though.

Actually, the masks which burn were props made for the effect. Blaisdell’s earlier creations were not torched in the same manner -though some of them did get singed when the prop guy prematurely tested the fire rig!

Well, foam rubber isn’t a medium designed for a long life either. Even Toho had to constantly make new monster suits because the old ones would fall apart on them.

If you’ve seen the color behind the scene shots, which are great, Beluah was definitely painted that color.

Whew! Thanks for easing my mind, Rock!
