Monster of the Day #3035

Let’s give Roger Corman some love. I’m sure this monster was nightmare fuel to more than one kiddie viewer back in the day. Corman was a great environmentalist. He recycled an earlier film, Naked Paradise, here and added a monster. Then he remade that a few years later with Creature from the Haunted Sea. Waste not, want not. The Beast from Haunted Cave available on, of course, the Cult Cinema Channel of YouTube.

Keep well, everyone!

    Ah, good old Humphrass.

  • I actually like this film and its monster a lot. I found it more entertaining than THE WASP WOMAN and CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA, all of which I got on a Corman 3-pack.

I’m not even sure what this one is. Cousin It’s brother???

Looks like Bigfoot in search of a barber to me.

As I recall it’s like a large, extremely hairy spider. You can’t really see its face because of the hair. It’s pretty nifty, all things considered.

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Sam Sherman is re-issuing a number of Independent International releases, beginning with DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN. The scare over the Chinese Flu has resulted in numerous walk-in movie theaters shutting their doors. Conversely, several drive-in theaters are finding new life. Closed drive-ins are being re-opened, and “pop-up” drive-in theaters are springing up. Taking advantage of this, Sherman is wanting to offer genuine drive-in movies to the revitalized circuit. He intends to offer nearly 40 titles from the IIP library for the market, each title freshly digitally restored and remastered. Which means, I guess, that kids around the country will soon have the chance to see digital remasters of some of the cruddiest-looking movies in film history. Much as I loath digital projection, I certainly wish Mr. Sherman well in his new enterprise and find myself hoping the local drive-in will be on board.

It is odd how the Wuhan Flu is bringing new life to the old drive-ins. May they continue to do well after the quarantine ends, which will hopefully be soon.

A comment/question for Ken and anyone else here who watches anime — I’ve been hearing a lot of recommendations from friends about a pair of series called ‘Beastars’ and ‘Brand New Animal’. They any good or not?

Some time ago, I saw an interesting documentary about drive-ins (I think it was on Prime). One of the reasons given for their disappearance was the 70’s gas crisis. People stopped buying big cars, and the cars they were buying weren’t comfortable to sit in for long stretches.

I’ve read that they are becoming popular in Germany as well. Maybe we will see the world’s first art house drive-in.

I think some of the “walk-ins” with big parking lots should set up an outdoor screen.

I’m not sure how much impact the gas crisis had, but it is true that modern cars are not made with drive-in theaters in mind -what with their swept-back tinted windshields and tiny bucket seats.

There’s a nice interview with Sherman over at boxofficepro.com

My biggest takeaway from that interview: Zandor Vorkov is still alive and is actively promoting the re-release of Dracula vs. Frankenstein… and his real name is Roger Engel!
