Monster of the Day #3014

Nothing says fun like a goofy giant bug movie. In this case I mean that literally, since the titular beastie is a fabric covered Volkswagen Bug. There is no escape from a monster that gets that kind of gas mileage! On (duh) the Cult Cinema Classics channel on YouTube.

Everyone have a great weekend, and keep well!

Back in the ’70s the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade had a very humble (and weird) start.

Rebane should have used a Ford Pinto for the spider. I mean not only could it run over you but explode as well.

  • This probably is my favorite cheap-ass movie monster ever! And I mean that with no irony whatsoever. I love this movie.

I’ve only seen the MST3K version. I don’t remember much, but I do remember Skipper calls someone “Little Buddy” over the phone.

    “Packers!!!!!”

  • God I love this movie. Really rather entertaining.

Somewhere out there, cowering and shuddering in the darkness, William Katt is watching this movie and muttering to himself, “Please tell me I’m adopted.”

  • Ericb

For a few moments you had me thinking he was Bill Rebane’s son and had changed his name.

  • Eric Hinkle

I only ever saw this once but I’ll never forget that giant spider. I wonder if those fleeing extras were paid anything beyond being asked ‘Wanna be in a monster movie’?

  • Beckoning Chasm

Since we’re past my “Keep” fixation, go to YouTube and search for “The
Keep (1983) Molasar (HD)” and you will see why I love this movie. I
would still love to know how they did the smoke effects, but since the
effects guy died during production, we might never know.

  • Gamera977

The smoke/dry ice ‘cloak’ effect on Molasar was pretty awesome! I have to wonder too how they did that. Plus the music and the way it was filmed- that was one hell of an introduction to the film’s monster!!!

I, too, love this monster so much. It’s a rare MST3K movie I saw before they did it, and enjoyed it fine without Mike and the ‘bots (although it was just as fun with them). Many years ago I called the ladies in to see “the greatest spider movie ever,” and of course got them in the living room just in time to see this scene. A young Chelsea, with almost frightening speed: “I wanna drive that spider!” Dara correctly identified the car just as quickly.
