Monster of the Day #3001

Ugh, Monday. Well, for me anyway, it’s off to work. Although again there are only a couple of us in a big space now, so the distancing thing isn’t that difficult. I hope the rest of you are keeping well and occupied. What are people watching. I hope you’re sitting down, but I’ve been watching anime. Speaking of, now that April is here it’s about time for the new ‘season’ of anime to start, so there will be a whole slew of new shows starting this week.

This is TerrorVision from Charles Band, who again I think was the Roger Corman of the ’80s. I haven’t seen this one, though.

The site I deal with for movies was having a “Comedy” sale, so I downloaded a bunch of Abbott and Costello movies, as well as some other classics (some of them sight unseen).

As for the above picture, knowing Charles Band, I bet the toy looked great!

Wow! Must be signs of the End of Days- first the Cubs win the World Series, then Corona-Chan, and now two movies I’ve seen and Ken hasn’t!!!

Personally I thought it hilarious, but your mileage may vary considering you’ve seen a lot more horror-comedies than I. It’s on Amazon Prime- or at least it was around the end of last year when I watched it again.

  • Ashamed to admit it, But I spent the weekend mostly alternating between binging Tiger King and watching COPS now that it has its own Pluto channel. Did see Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things for the first time Friday night. Slow set-up means spending an hour plus with assholes, but the payoff is sweet and you can certainly see flashes of the brilliance Bob Clark would bring to his later films in what is essentially, a feature length college film.

Did a lot of long neglected yard work and cleaned out my woodshop Saturday morning, so maybe I will get some projects of the ground before too long. Then I was too tired to get off the couch the rest of the weekend.

Watched Carnival of Monsters last night for my classic Dr. Who fix and have been also listening to collection 3 of the lost episode audios for my commute entertainment (like Ken, I have no work from home option).

No work from home here either and since I don’t really like social gatherings nothing has really changed much for me- go to work, come back home – been self-isolating for the last two weeks. Finally I had to get out and the weather was so nice so I took the top off the car, rolled the windows down and took a drive. Figured it wasn’t much of a danger since I wasn’t going to interact with many people.
I did stop by my favorite Japanese restaurant. They were doing carry-out only. It was a bit surreal as I talked to the owners while they got my order ready from the other end of the room about 20 feet / 6 metres away. I picked up a hundred dollar gift certificate – if can afford it not a bad idea to help people running businesses pay the rent till this is over.
Oh and I did watch ‘Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter’ and ‘The Satanic Rites of Dracula’. The first I hadn’t seen in ages, the second for the first time. Which did raise a few questions- I guess you could call a sprinkler system ‘running water’ but I’d always assumed it meant natural running water like a creek or river. So by these rules I could take out a vampire with a water pistol? And apparently vampires like sharks have no reverse gear- once they start moving toward prey they can’t back up???

I’m glad you kinda/sorta/maybe liked Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things. In fact, I *did* enjoy the film’s setup… I just thought they should’ve pared it down, especially that extremely weak mid-section where the protags are clowning around with Orville the corpse and meanwhile NOTHING ELSE IS HAPPENING.

BTW it’s fun to note that the actor who played Jeff (the bald paunchy guy) ended up playing the store Santa Claus in Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story.

I looked the other day and it didn’t seem to be there. I used to lament all the stuff I’d bought in the past (and continue to, occasionally), which seemed redundant in the days of streaming. Then I realized that this stuff disappears all the time, so it’s better to have hard copies of the stuff you really want.

  • Overall, I really did like it. But yeah, the stretch between the ex-girlfriend’s hilariously sarcastic Satan summoning, and the wonderful mass-rising-from-their-graves shot should have been trimmed significantly. Admittedly that would have left them well short of what was considered respectable feature length by ’72, given that the movie only runs 87 minutes even with all the padding in the second act.

Lol, I watched ‘CSPwDT’ the other night because you guys were talking about it. Interesting movie, not sure I liked it that much- I kinda dislike movies where the whole cast are jerks. I did end up sorta cheering for Paul and Terry, since weren’t quite so annoying. And it was awesome to see Allan get what he deserved though you could see it coming about five light-years away.

It’s on Amazon Prime if anyone else wants to see it.
