Monster of the Day #2099

Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, Werewolf by Night, and now the most horrifying monster of all…a clown.

You know, when I was a kid clowns were considered fun. I don’t know when that huge cultural shift happened where they’re just considered creepy now. Weird.

Keep well, everyone.

Sorta OT, but Stuart Gordon passed away a couple of days ago. His stuff was uneven, but when it worked, it really worked.

If Man-Thing pulled that annoying Pennywise out of the sewer and beat the stuffing out of him I think I’d buy it.

I just noticed that this cover says Ploog along the left edge. Were Marvel covers normally signed by their respective artists, or did this one just slip past the editors?

I think the ‘creepy clown’ has been around since at least Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘Hop-Frog’, and according to some stuff I’ve read goes back as far as the Harlequin (or Hellequin) of the late Middle Ages.

  • Whatever knows fear burns at the Man Thing’s touch! God, I love this guy.

  • Gamera977

Not quite as old but I watched ‘One Step Beyond’ epsode ‘The Clown’ the other week. From 1960 it has a creepy clown stalking a guy who abuses his wife.

He is great but some of the stories for him by this one particular writer felt very hamfisted in their ‘lessons’ to me. Or maybe I’m just remembering them wrong. Does Marvel still use Man-Thing or have they forgotten about him?
