Monster of the Day #2021

On Monday, I finally saw Spirited Away, and in a theater to boot. It was the masterpiece it’s been repped to be. Just terrific. Nothing pops on a theater screen like a beautifully animated film. Again, I love movies and anime about the supernatural, because Japanese folklore is so different from Western folklore. That said, this is probably the best film about a human caught in a Faerie Court.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

One of a very small number of movies that I recommend without any hesitation or qualifications.

    100% Agree. Stone cold masterpiece.

  • The Rev.

I’m so happy you got to experience it on the big screen for the first time! I got to see it at a local theater earlier this year, albeit I had seen it before. It was still as magical and masterful as it was the first time, just bigger and more vibrant. Like you, I love the Japanese mythology just for how different and diverse it is.

I’m rewatching Konosuba this week so I can catch the new movie in theaters next week. Unsurprisingly, the series holds up pretty well.

Just asking, what about Princess Mononoke?

  • kgb_san_diego

Pretty much equally great. Down to a matter of personal taste between them. Also, I don’t recommend Mononoke to people who like happy and light entertainment — it is neither.

  • Beckoning Chasm

I honestly didn’t like Mononoke. Don’t get me wrong, it was beautifully made, I just felt like an outsider throughout the film, there was nothing to pull me in. Spirited Away, on the other hand, had the little girl who was an outsider to this universe just like I was. As she learned more about the world, so did I.

No-Face is easily my favorite character, though.

  • Eric Hinkle

Yes. It’s not what I’d call a cheery film. Though I love the giant wolf kami/yokai in it.
