Monster of the Day #2007

The third movie was the fantastic Golden Bat (Odon Bat), revolving around the skeletal manga hero who is considered by some to be the first superhero. The rat guy is the villain. It’s pretty much the greatest movie ever made. Sandy had it on a Euro DVD that sold it as a Fantomas (!!) film.

So it’s Japanese I swear the first photo made me think of a Mexican film. Maybe it’s some sort of weird ‘Day of Dead’ impression I get.

Yeah, you’d think that. Has an interesting theme song, though.

  • The Golden Bat cartoon from the late 60s was released in Brazil as Fantomas as well.

This was pretty fun. Golden Bat and his Cane of Whoopass. The rat costume is so bad that it wraps background to being awesome.

Cool. Just looked at trailer. Must see. Sonny Chiba!

Just looking at those pictures above makes me want to see this film. Is it available in the USA on DVD?

EDIT: Never mind, the whole film is available for free on YouTube.

Oh, and talking Japanese art films, the entire run of the Showa-era Godzilla films will be shown on TCM Fridays in October.

I had been waiting for years to see this, and it did not disappoint. I loved it. It would be great on a double bill with Evil Brain from Outer Space. My favorite part is that the hero here laughs like a stereotypical villain while beating people to death with his pimp cane. The laugh was reused by members of the crowd quite a bit the rest of the day.

I don’t know about greatest movie ever made, though. Not in a world with Super Inframan and Ship of Monsters.
