Monster of the Day #2004

We continue towards lackluster days. Shawn of the Dead is brilliant (and the Dawn of the Dead remake was surprisingly good), but again, zombies are pretty generic. Far worse is the attempts to turn monsters into blockbuster material. Van Helsing? Blecch. Saw started a whole semi-genre, but I don’t think Jigsaw was in it yet, so no monster. The Grudge was solid but we just did The Ring. Let’s just do a pulp cover, and man, why isn’t this a movie?!

  • Sean of the Dead remains one of my favorite movies, period. Not favorite Horror movies, or zombie movies, or British Comedies, or any other subcategory. It is brilliantly paced and the characters are all believably well-drawn. Hot Fuzz is good, but never quite as good (less believable, for one, despite its completely realistic and zombie-free setting) and The World’s End doesn’t even bear mentioning (although I did like it slightly better on the second viewing than the first).

    Ya know if I were a Robo-Gangster I’d at least wear a fedora…

And what kind of bat is red? I was thinking less ‘The Human Bat’ and more ‘The Imp’ or ‘Demon’.

I still haven’t seen Shaun of the Dead. No, I don’t know why, either. I did finally see Hot Fuzz a few weeks back thanks to Sandy, and pretty much loved it.

I wonder if the story lives up to the artwork? Because man, that’s killer stuff.

You’re the dirty bat that killed my brother.

  • Bruce Wayne went through several attempts before settling on his final costume…..

  • Beckoning Chasm

This has to be a novelization of a Mexican wrestling movie.

Ditto on Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. In these early Pegg films, it was also fun trying to play spot-the-star, like a pre-Hobbit Martin Freeman in Shaun or an unbilled Cate Blanchett in Hot Fuzz. (Not to mention the virtually unrecognizable Edward Woodward in Fuzz. When I was watching the closing credits, I was saying to myself, “Whoa, that bald crazy Scotsman was the Equalizer”?!)

    Ha!

  • The Rev.

Yeah, I didn’t recognize him, either, and I was like, “Where was he?” I had to look it up, and then I was like, “Him!?” Also, Sandy and I knew we recognized Timothy Dalton, but for the life of us could not remember who he was until the credits.

  • Eric Hinkle

I must echo Mister Begg’s question. How did this not ever become a movie?
