Monster of the Day #2003

I guess 23 Days Later was the ‘big’ horror movie in 2003, but their zombies looked like everyone else’s zombies. Since everyone knows I have a certain amount of affection for this film, I’ll be self-indulgent and pick this.

  • Beckoning Chasm

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best film in either franchise.

  • Gamera977

‘You call that a knife Freddy??? I’ll show you a KNIFE!!!’

  • It was certainly better than it had any business being. Which is damning with faint praise, I suppose.

  • Rock Baker

The definition of a miracle picture.

  • Marsden

    I’ve been waiting for F v. J 2 for a looong time. Why isn’t it out yet?

  • Ken_Begg

This was such a problematic idea, but they pulled it off in a way they still haven’t with Alien vs Predator, which is a much more natural fit.

  • Ugh. That’s a fair assessment. I genuinely enjoyed FVJ, for all the challenges of crossing over such tonally different series. I think it helps that it really is more a NOES movie that features Jason than anything else. And that works because we are dealing with a fantasy monster and a monster who attacks *through* fantasy.

AVP on the other hand was just execrable and had no sense of either of its parent franchises. The arctic setting really did it no favors either.

  • Kirk

And as bad as AvP was, the sequel was a thousand times worse. Just mean-spirited and not fun at all.

  • Beckoning Chasm

Not to mention they filmed the entire thing with the lens cap on. I’ve never seen a worse lit movie.
