Monster of the Day #2002

It’s the worst thing to come out of a TV until the last season of Game of Thrones, amiright? (See, I can do topical.)

Happy Friday, everyone! And just a week away from meeting up at Sandy’s for this year’s T-Fest. I hope to see some of you there.

The Ring was an unexpectedly good remake of the original (I mean, look how dreadful the recent Rings looked). It was certainly good enough to kick off a little wave of often decent American remakes of Asian horror films. And while purists will no doubt get sniffy like that, it undoubtedly broadened the Stateside interest in watching the original versions, causing many films to hit DVD here that otherwise may not have.

Anyway, have a good weekend!

Well, I’m going to be sniffy…
The only proper way is to watch the original ‘Ringu’:

    with subtitles…
on a Sony TV and DVD player…
    dressed in a kimono…
    eating sushi…
    with chopsticks…

  • Beckoning Chasm

I’ve never seen this one…in fact, I don’t think I’ve seen any of the Hollywood Asian remakes.

  • Gamera977

Same here even though I’ve heard good stuff about some of them.

Last week I watched the Korean horror movie ‘Don’t Click’ about two sisters who blunder into a cursed web video that unleashes a vengeful ghost on them. Same general concept of a cursed video but it takes it new directions, being mainly about the mental breakdown of the younger sister and the older one caring for her. Personally I really liked it and would recommend it as a neat ‘Ringu’ inspired sorta film.

  • And then die seven days later? (grin)

  • The Rev.

This is the only one of the American remakes I’ve seen. I was actually kind of glad I saw the remake first, as it plays the mystery out a lot longer than the original film does. Honestly, it’s a really well-done remake. There are even things I prefer to the original, such as the make-up on the victims, which ties in nicely witih Sadako’s backstory; and the more immediate, visceral ending. Too bad about using CGI for one of the original’s creepier moments, though…

  • Gamera977

Actually when Sadako crawled out of the TV she looked back and said ‘What the hell are you watching!?! It’d be worse torture for you to watch the end of that than for I to kill you!’

  • Ken_Begg

That’s Disney and Apple after the initial deals on their streaming services expire.

  • Beckoning Chasm

If it was “Winterbeast” then it might have killed HER.

Here here. Also, and I believe I’ve mentioned this before, the Sadako ghost was creepier simply in the way she moved. Just watching her walk toward the TV screen was the stuff of nightmares. As much as I appreciated the remake, the Samara scene doesn’t compare.

  • Ring/Ringu is one of the rare stories I’ve liked every adaptation of I’ve seen.

  • Eric Hinkle

You’re lucky. When Sadako crawled out of my TV she took one look at me, said ‘I’m wasting my time here’ and crawled right back in.

Travel safely to Sandy’s and give him our best. Many times I wish I could visit him myself just to sit at his feet as he expounds upon movies, horror, Lovecraft, and doubtless a multitude of other topics while I take it all in like a really clueless-looking acolyte.
