Keep Watching the Skies!

Well, we’re back, but since I’m not 100% sure why we went down last month, there’s no reason to think it won’t happen again. We’ll see. Paul’s theory is that spambots are pulling up the site a billion times looking to put their *&#$~@% ads in our articles. I do know that just recently we’ve started getting a ton of spam messages caught in the queue, so it seems likely that’s related. I hope we don’t have to go to that stupid system with the twisty passwords to post a message, but we’ll see.

By the way, if anyone ever spots a spam message in an older piece, please let me know so I can kill it.

In the meantime, it’s good to be back.

Would it be possible to nab the IP addresses from the spam-bots (from their stupid spammy posts) and then block them from the site in general?

  • I accidentally killed a message somebody tried to post here while I was deleting tons of spam messages. My apologies. That’s probably the problem, though. I’m getting two hundred spam messages or more everyday in the message queue. At the very least, that represents the site being called up six thousands times a month or more.

I’m not sure what to do about.

    hey man,

That was me :), message follows (to the best of my horrible memory)

    Longtime reader first time poster.
thought i’d shed some light on the mystery:
I noticed that just a few days before you guys went “bandwith exceeded” a link was posted to this site on the Somethingawful forums called “post your links to awesome websites” or somesuch – considering they have around 90.000 subscribers and God knows how many “lurkers” it’s entirely possible that your servers got their butts kicked by the influx of goons combined with the infuriating spambots.

Either that or i’m just talking out my *ss.

anyways love, love, LOVE the site.

    Keep up the good work.
