Monster of the Day #1973

NEVER HAS THE SCREEN KNOWN SUCH VIOLENCE!!!!

  • Gamera977

    Wow, ET’s stop-motion cousin is kinda a dick…

  • Eric Hinkle

Do I even want to know what film this is?

  • bgbear_rnh

Destroying the neighbor kid’s army men.

  • Mike Weller

    I’m guessing…no.

  • Gamera977

I was thinking ‘Stretch’ Armstrong. Looks more like corn syrup coming out of the neck than blood.

  • MY GOD WHERE WERE THE WARNINGS! THE NOT SAFE FOR WORK SIGNS! I LOST MY BREAKFAST AT THE SIGHT OF THIS DEPRAVITY! THE HORRORS! THE HORRORS! THE ABSOLUTE HORROR!!!!!

  • Rock Baker

Off topic, but can we look forward to a Jabootu review of TITANIC? I screened the film again last night and found it to be one of the most self-centered, insulting blockbusters I’ve ever subjected myself to.

  • I have never seen Titanic, and as the years go by I grow happier I didn’t.

This is from the man who voluntarily watched Cathy’s Curse twice.

  • Rock Baker

Had I a copy of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER or the earlier film titled TITANIC, I would have gone with those. I imagine even that animated musical version would have been a better choice.

  • thunderclancat

I’d look forward to anything that would make fun of Leo DiCrapio.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ll second this just to hear from someone else who didn’t think TITANIC was the greatest film ever made by mortal man.

  • Eric Hinkle

It doesn’t look like he stretched very far.

  • Ken_Begg

Half a great movie, half an awful movie. The awful half is mostly what made it the most successful movie of all time.

  • Gamera977

Well ‘A Night to Remember’ is the definitive Titanic film. I saw the Cameron ‘Titanic’ when it ran in the theater way back then. Didn’t leave that much impression on me. I didn’t get all the hoopla, it was an okay movie but nothing special.
I enjoyed the ’96 TV movie ‘Titanic’ much more. The male lead was much more mature and less annoying than DiCrapio. The female lead was the stunning Catherine Zeta Jones, much more attractive than Winset. And there was a great subplot about Tim Curry robbing all the rich of their valuables.
Personally I think Cameron peaked as a film maker decades ago. The new ‘Terminator’ movie looks terrible and frankly I don’t care about his fifty zillion ‘Avatar’ sequels. I loved ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ but it was a Robert Rodriguez film. Cameron provided the original adaption script, lots of advice, and the Hollywood clout to get it made. But Rodriguez did all the heavy lifting.

That was my memory from the theatrical screening I saw, but the great half seemed to be missing from the copy I found in a box of VHS tapes I got. Honestly, the whole thing was a mess.

  • Rock Baker

In fairness, I have to say that during this last screening I found Leo wasn’t as much of a problem as I felt he was back during my theatrical viewing. Honestly, his performance wasn’t bad, apart from being saddled with such a poor script. He seemed less child-like than I’d remembered.

  • Mike Weller

The Great Luke Ski song ‘Titanic Monday’, to the Bangle Manic Monday.
Best line-“How many chick flicks have you seen where over fifteen hundred people died.”

  • Eric Hinkle

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is amazing. The last 40 minutes will rip your heart out.

  • thunderclancat

I’ll have to look that up.

  • Gamera977

And now I have ‘Maniac Monday’ running over and over in my head…

    Thanks!

    Thanks a lot!!!

  • The Rev.

I have a feeling anyone that frequents a place like this is very unlikely to think that Titanic is the greatest film ever.

Of course, neither would anyone with any taste. ZING!!

I saw it in the theater because my girlfriend at the time wanted to see it. It was actually a lot of fun, but not because of the movie for the most part. We went on a double date with one of my best friends and a guy she’d just started seeing. Our partners made the mistake of letting us sit together, because my friend and I were like one person as far as taste in movies, music, literature, etc. We both found ourselves getting restless, and occasionally making comments to amuse ourselves, to our partners’ mutual discomfort. (It was a theater in a small college town at an odd time of day, so no one else was in there for us to bother, at least.) It came to a head when she and I started howling at the guy bouncing off the propeller and making fall-based puns (Ken and Kirk would’ve been proud). She and I got an elbow in the ribs and a shush from our dates at the exact same time, which just made us laugh harder. She and that guy didn’t last long; somehow, my girlfriend put up with me for over two years.

Years later, Dara made me watch it again with her. She did not put up with my comments for very long, which meant I had to pay attention to the movie. Turns out, yeah, it’s not that good when you have to, you know, watch it.

Winterbeast. As Ken’s intimated, it’s basically an inferior Equinox, although it has some fun moments, mostly monster-related.
