Coolest Movie Cars…

Jabootu Proofreading Shadow Minister Bill Leary dropped me a note about this run-down of the 50 Coolest Movie Cars.  My first impression is that 50 may have been too many.  Chili Palmer’s van in Get ShortyThe car from Cobra?!  Whatever.  On the other hand, I’m not really much of a car guy.

That said, if the number count alone is what allowed for the shamefully underappreciated Fozzie’s Uncle’s Studebaker (#46) or The Car (#44) to make the list, more power to them.  Their number one choice wouldn’t make my personal top ten, though.  Also, three of their top 15 cars are actually from TV shows made into movies.  Lame.  (I don’t count in the incredibly cool Mach 5 because it was made actual as opposed to cartoon.  However, I notice the “Mach 6” didn’t make it.  Another reason to dislike the movie.)

  • What would YOUR choice be for number one? Personally, I thought the James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 should have been at least #2. That car truly focused the movie goer’s attention on cars – period.

By what metric is the Delorean not awesome? It flies, goes through time, looks awesome, and is important to the plot of the film. (Otherwise, it’d just be a nut o’ fun)

But then, I’m not really a car guy either. The cars, to me, would have to be memorable for what they do in the movie more than anything about their design.

  • A metric implies a quantifiable standard. My view is subjective. The DeLorean just does nothing for me. The Aston Martin might get my nod.

Trademark cars are more of a TV thing as, ironically, this list demonstrates. Any cool car list without KITT on it (for all its goofiness) leaves me somewhat cold.

Kudos again, though, for including The Car on the list.

I haven’t read the article yet to see where it came in but the coolest movie car of all time for me is the converted Jaguar hearse from Harold and Maude. So emo! *g*

And they missed it! Even on the final “list every other car ever in a movie” page.

    EPIC FAIL.

“A metric implies a quantifiable standard. My view is subjective. The DeLorean just does nothing for me. ”

    I suppose that’s fair.

Agree with you on the lack of KITT, though.

  • The Rev. D.D.

No ‘73 Corvette Stingray with personal arsenal from Cleopatra Jones?
No Oldsmobile Delta Royale from just about all of Sam Raimi’s movies?
No CARR? (Cooler than KITT ’cause it was evil and had a laser.)

    EPIC FAIL indeed.

The Aston Martin would also probably be my pick. Possibly a Batmobile. Or maybe Ecto-1, since I love giant old station wagons.
The DeLorean’s neat and all, but just doesn’t do it for me.

I found myself underwhelmed by most of their choices; seriously, in how many of those films were the cars of any importance at all?

I wish they’d included TV shows, but I suppose most of the list would be from television if they had. The Munster mobile, the Beverly Hillbillie’s truck, the Mystery machine…

  • I was all set to rant about the inclusion of the Cooper Minis from the remade The Italian Job until I saw that the originals came in at #12. Still doesn’t mean the new ones have any business on this kind of list, but eh, I’ll take what I can get. If I were compiling the list, I’d have to stretch the rules just a bit to get Syd Mead’s gorgeous police Spinners from Blade Runner in there. I mean, come on, look at that:

And if they’re going to allow the General Lee in on a technicality, I would throw the “movies only” rule out the window altogether and bring in the Lotus Seven from The Prisoner. Now THAT is a car.

The Pursuit Special should have been number one. How often do you see the destruction of a man’s car motivate him to wreak bloody vengeance upon the dastardly villains? And if you’re a car person, the title ‘the last of the V-8 interceptors’ is like ‘undisputed heavyweight champion’.

What rules would you have to stretch to get the spinners on the list? I think it’s more likely the people who made the list are deficient in their cinematic education. ‘What would you say if I told you I hadn’t seen Bladerunner…yet?’
