Monster of the Day #1886

After that horrid run of (for me) recent dreck, I was feeling pretty battered. Surely the worst was over, though. With time for just two more movies to go, I went to the just-opened pizza place downstairs just for a breather. While in line, though, I heard two fellow attendees behind me discussing the next film. When I heard the title Lisztomania I about broke out in tears. It’s the kind of purportedly satirical pretentious swill (courtesy of pretentious swill artisan Ken Russell) where Ringo Starr plays the Pope and Wagner is convicted of being solely responsible for Nazism by literally appearing as a Nazi Dracula Frankenstein (Monster), complete with fangs. Take that, Wagner! Ugh. Add this to the roster of “Films I Happily Thought I’d Never Have To See Again But Then I Did.”

  • Also ugly and full of giant penises. And made by a man that thinks dressing Wagner in a Sailor Hat with “Nietsche” Scribbled across the brim is both hilarious and subtle.

    I am still holding out for my theory that Tertiary Syphilis is responsible for all of Ken Russell’s output.

    Listen to her; she knows of what she speaks. This was horrid. The only good thing I can say about it was that it had some attractive ladies in it, but I can get that in a movie that DOESN’T bore and anger me.

    Yes, Russell’s conceit that he is a boundary-pushing intellectual rather than a less funny Benny Hill with pretentions is his most irksome quality. Wow. Look at all the giant penises. You sure are blowing my narrow little middle class mind, Ken Russell. How avant-garde thou art.
