Monster of the Day #1876

I’ve always been frustrated by the fact that in the age of deluxe hardcover reprints of classic comic strips and single panel artists like Gary Larson the New Yorker cartoons of macabre master Charles Addams have never been similarly collected. You’d think he’d have a leg up what with everyone knowing what the Addams Family is and all, but nope. Addams reminded me of Hitchcock in the black humor department, and he hit that note quite a bit earlier.

I have a book dedicated to Charles Addams cartoons. So one did exist at some point.

  • Yeah, but they all seem to be paperbacks. There’s no “grand retrospective comprehensive collection” as far as I know.

What I like about Addams’ art is that some of them are very, very subtle. You’re looking at the drawing, over and over, and then you say “…oh. Ohhhh…”

Yes, and most of those were avialable when I was a kid. I own a complete Calvin & Hobbes, a complete Dilbert, complete Don Martin, complete Far Side, deluxe and comprehensive Peanuts collections…where’s the complete Charles Addams?

My book is called The World of Charles Addams and it’s available through 3rd parties on Amazon either paperback or hardback.
