Monster of the Day #1703

Sorry to have been offsite so much lately. In short, my legs are giving me a lot of problems; they just don’t work very well right now. I saw a doctor last week and got the ball rolling on that. However, that means that although I get up quite early (4:00, generally) it takes me so much longer to get ready that I don’t often have time to attend to the MotD. (Getting a ton of snow dumped on us a week ago didn’t help.) So I really need to start setting these up the night before.

Anyway, again, apologies.

  • Glad to see the illustrious Mr. Begg back in action.

So what is this and why have I never seen it?

  • Ericb

It’s from a second season Outer Limits episode. I wonder if the actors started laughing when they first saw this thing after reading in the script that they would be facing the most ferocious monster in the galaxy. Kind of like The Flying Claw Jr.

Get well soon Ken. I hope it’s nothing serious.

    .

  • Ericb

Duh, the Giant Claw. I must be going senile.

  • Dorothy Cobb

Hope the doctor is able to help with your legs. Feel better soon.

  • It looks like someone crossed the Gillman with the Wolf man…

  • zombiewhacker

… or crossed one of the Gappas with Dr. Zaius.

  • Gamera977

If I remember the creature is described as the most dangerous alien creature humanity has ever encountered. I think it was telepathic and of human level intelligence but otherwise it was… well… a little underwhelming. Like it’s informed attribute ninja-like stealthiness where the stuntman in this big bulky costume moves around behind actors ignoring it.
The real enemy in this episode ‘The Duplicate Man’ by SF writer Clifford D. Simak is the duplicate man of the title. Our hero uses a highly illegal process to make a duplicate of himself to hunt the monster. Then of course the duplicate decides it wants to live and turns on the original guy. The monster does plot to turn them against each other but frankly I think it could have been dropped for a tighter better episode. But I guess they needed a ‘bear’ aka a monster in the episode.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, my thoughts and prayers Ken. I assume as a librarian it’s from spending so much time on your feet.

  • Gamera977

I always thought of it as a bird head on a gorilla suit but yeah a Gappa probably hits it closer.

  • Ericb

It looks like a sports team mascot.

  • Ericb

I think the big difference between the 1st season of The Outer Limits and the 2nd was that the 2nd was trying to be a more purely sci-fi series and attempted to downplay the horror element that was so pervasive in the 1st season. Many of the 2nd season episodes lack true “bears” and in many that have them they are almost superfluous.

  • Ericb

Plus the “bears” were also pretty expensive.

  • Well, crap. Why didn’t I think of that?

  • Eric Hinkle

Just glad to have you back with us.

    And the monster looks great.

  • Rock Baker

    God bless, Ken.

  • Beckoning Chasm

It’s actually a mask from the first season episode “Second Chance” with a big beak rather awkwardly added.

  • Beckoning Chasm

No need to apologize, we’re all glad you’re back and hope your health issues get solved.

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I remember the bird alien from that now that you mention it. Thanks!

  • Flangepart

Aw, man. I understand the leg problems, Com-padre. Get better!
This guy kinda look like a hairy Gill Man knockoff.
“Hey, the suit don’t have claws!”
“We took ’em off, when the last guy wore it went to scratch his a$$, and went a bit too deep.”

  • Flangepart

    You’re borderline sane?

  • Eric Hinkle

This is a bit OT but was anyone else surprised to learn that the Black Panther movie actually has M’Baku the Man-Ape in it? If you wonder why I’m surprised, just do a Google image search for him. How did they get away with that character?

  • Marsden

Man-Ape is one of Black Panther’s oldest enemies. I’m happy they included him.

Sorry you’re having problems, Ken, I hope and pray you make a speedy recovery.

You are one of my best friends that I’ve never met in person.

  • bgbear_rnh

    Not “The Craw” “The Craw.

  • bgbear_rnh

[budget exit, pursued by a bear]

  • bgbear_rnh

If he squawks constantly like an annoying parrot, I would consider that a threat to man kind.

  • That’s never been proven.

  • Eric Hinkle

I do know about Man-Ape, and I’ve always liked him.

I am just surprised that a black man in the movie whose whole gimmick is centered around being /like a gorilla/ hasn’t angered people.

  • Ann McGarity

I am watching Sexette as I write. It’s your fault. All your fault. But I hope you get well soon.

I am watching Sextette as I write, and it’s your fault. All your fault. But I hope you get well soon. I’m still such a fan
