Monster of the Day #1486

Could have been worse. He could have been reading People Magazine.

The rest of the week will probably feature monsters from Attack on Titan. It leaves Netflix on the 10th of this month, so I figured I might as well binge watch the series while I can. Only seen the first three episodes so far, its now in a Starship Troopers riff.

  • Oh, man. Attack on Titan. One the one hand I can’t believe Netflix is losing such a great show, especially with a second season on the horizon. On the other hand, it’s a show I don’t know if I can sit through again. Very grueling, very tough on the characters.

I think of recent years it’s the third best anime I’ve seen. Second would be Another, which I think of as Final Destination done right. First, though, goes to One Punch Man. Of the three One Punch Man is the only one I’ve watched more than once.

‘Hey buddy, could you point me toward the biography section, though I think you humans call it horror?’

  • KeithB

Is that supposed to be the same creature? Looks like he has put on some weight, he has a few spare tires around his middle.
Can someone answer me a question about “Attack on Titan”? Where does the name come from. For the longest time I thought it was a story about the moon of Saturn. Shouldn’t it be “Attack the Titans” or “Attack of the Titans”?

  • No clue about the title. Maybe it’s a direct translation of the Japanese title?

  • Eric Balzer

Maybe the guy is reading Porn from Beyond and the creature is the models father saying “Don’t even think about it stupid human. That’s my daughter you’re looking at.”

  • Beckoning Chasm

“Wow, monster, you used to be a lot more fabulous!”

  • Gamera977

Yeah, I was thinking maybe the monster was a bit older now and had gained some weight and lost his hair. I like Eric B’s explanation better though.

I have that story in an CAS collection. I’ll have to pull it out and reread it. I really like the guy’s work, Smith IMHO reads like a Lovecraft who could actually write.

  • CaptNemo

The guy with the abs didn’t like someone looking at pictures of his girlfriend.

“Nobody drools on her except ME!!!!”

  • Gamera977

    ‘Pickman’s Bikini Model’?

One Punch Man is great! Second season this year, I think. I’m a neophyte on Anime, and I’m sure my tastes are largely distressingly lame. I did just buy the set for Cowboy Bebop, though, as that’s highly rewatchable and the blu rays were on sale.

  • Flangepart

Upper right corner. ‘A Clayton magazine’…So, Dr. F’s old man was a better mad than he was…explains a lot, ya think?

  • I was shocked how good One Punch Man was. Really thought it was going to be terrible with its premise, but man, was I wrong.

Cowboy Bebop was excellent, too, though I thought the last episode was a trifle off.

  • Eric Hinkle

I agree. Out of the Three Musketeers of Weird Tales (Lovecraft, Bob Howard, and CAS), it always feels like he was far and away the best writer and stylist of the group. Though he couldn’t touch Two-Gun Bob for sheer storytelling power.

  • Eric Hinkle

I Googled that phrase in my amused innocence, and what I found! Aiieee!

  • Gamera977

Yeah, Howard definitely put the energy into every tale he told. I loved Lovecraft in my teens but now well, the last few stories I read I just get bored by his characters who seem to wander like sleepwalkers to their own doom. Howard’s protagonists would fight it tooth and claw and Smith would at least try to resist.

  • An early version of the Michelin Man…..

  • The Rev.

Cowboy Bebop was indeed excellent. I’ve heard enough about One Punch Man now that I’ll have to start with that one; I think it’s on Hulu.

Thanks to Ken’s mention I started AoT yesterday, as I had been meaning to check it out. I promptly binged the entire first season because I could not stop. I really enjoyed it, and I look forward to more. So, thanks for that kick I needed, Ken. I hope you like it, too.

I kind of thought that’s where the show, tonally at least, was going the whole time, so I didn’t find it jarring.
