Monster of the Day #1462

Things went swimmingly at T-Fest this year, with hiccups only appearing at the end of the evening. Thunder of the Gigantic Serpent (which I’m sure I’ve featured here before) starting things off and was delightful. Then it was on to Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, one of those films that while modest, if far better than you remember. The aliens are intentionally campy, the surf music score was great, all the bikini girls were really cute, etc. I’ve already featured Mull in these pages before, that’s a great monster suit. The “Frankenstein” make-up is pretty good too.

I’m glad that Thunder of Gigantic Serpent was a fun watch, and that there was plenty of rubber snake action.

I’m also glad this movie went over so well, and that more people have now been exposed to the magic that is Dr. Nadir. As someone (Mr. Rational, maybe? Black Chad?) rightly pointed out, it’s a nice bit of irony that the best thing in the entire movie is named “Nadir.”

You’ve featured “Frankenstein” as MOTD too. I specifically recall making a joke about James Karen and a crash-test dummy in connection to the photo you used.

As to the film itself, I’m always astounded by how slow and dull it is, given all the cheesy good fun promised by one of the single greatest drive-in titles in movie history. THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH delivers a lot more bang for the buck, but FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER is just gobs of unfulfilled potential.

“Thunder of the Gigantic Serpent”? What, the people it eats give it gas?

Funny how that potential plot point is missed out on. Ya’d think Corman would have milked that cash dinosaur by now.

Love this flick. The music, the goof factor, and the TONS of riffing material I see in it…it’s mental comfort food for the sarcastic mind.
