Monster of the Day #1461

Sorry about last week, as you may have heard, Chicago had a minor sports thing going on. The result was a rally that drew the largest gathering of people in US history. Crazy.

I’ve finally caught up on sleep (and seen Dr Strange, which was pretty good–14 movies for Marvel without a clunker, which is amazing) just to time to realize that HOLY COW T-Fest is weekend already. So I’ll be seeing some of you this week.

I think one of the reasons I like the monsters on this show (and in the similarly themed Samson post-apocalypse comic book) is that they are pretty basic. I think I’ve made this argument before, but CGI allows for monsters to be really crazy, and they just aren’t as iconic and archetypal than monsters that are exaggerated versions of knows animals and stuff. This here obviously is your classic ‘body of one thing head of another’ creature.

‘Open wide, yeah there’s your problem. You have a human toe stuck between your third and fourth left molar.’

I was thinking this weekend about SF being the only kind of literature that becomes obsolete. There was a joke on Babylon 5 about the Cubs still not having a World Series win in 2259…

Not much of a sports fan but in all the bad news these days I was really happy to see them end their bad streak.

a Sniger . . . it’s pretty much my favorite animal. It’s like a tiger and a snake mixed… bred for its skills in magic

Thundarr did indeed have some great monsters. And once more, congrats to you and all the other Cubs fans. I hope Chicago didn’t get TOO wild this weekend.

    THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN: Veterinarian dentist!
BTW, Ken. the Oct/21 Louder with Crowder podcast as three great Captain Planet parodies. Juuuust thought ya’ll ought to know.

  • Rock Baker

Are we ever going to get that review of HALLOWEEN II, by the way?

  • Acethepug

Thank you! Glad this guy got an appearance.

  • Ken_Begg

Also time to retire the up to now hilariously ironic Kolchak episode where he had Cubs World Series tickets at Wrigley (so long ago they were for an *afternoon* game).

  • Ken_Begg

    No rioting! Nicely done, Chicago.

  • Ken_Begg

    Thanks!

  • Ken_Begg

But…but….that’d mean I’d have to *write* something!

  • Eric Hinkle

Some people I know who expected (were looking forward to?) anarchy in the streets of Chicago are probably disappointed right now. That said, good for Chicago indeed! Be more civilized than LA sports fans.

  • Marsden

Yes. It would. And we’d read it!

  • Rodford Smith

His monsters remind me a lot of those in the _Mightly Samson_ comic.

We watched a few episodes of “Thundarr” this weekend, including the one with this critter. Also one that seemed appropriate considering we were hanging out at Sandy Petersen’s house: “Stalker From the Stars.” It ended up being more in debt to “Who Goes There?”/The Thing than Lovecraft, but anyway. Just great stuff all around.
