Aside from one major title, not a lot this week. A couple of nice, cheap Christmas grabbag gifts, though.

Still, any week is a good week when it brings you the insane Japanese sci-fi laughfest Latitude Zero, much less in the form of a Double Disc Special Edition from the fine folks at Media Blasters. Flying submarines, bat men, laser beams, lions, embiggened lions, embiggened lions with wings grafted on, embiggened lions with wings grafted on and given the brain of an insane sadistic woman…Ah, good times. Seriously, put this on your Christmas list, or give it yourself. Stars imported actors Joseph Cotten and Caesar Romero, who as the villain finally gets to dump the overly restrained acting style he used when playing the Joker on the old Batman TV show. For goodness sake, JUST LOOK AT THE DVD COVER!!!

TV sets for the week include Beverly Hills 90210 S3; Big Love S2; Dirt S1; Frasier S10; Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. S3; Lost S3; Weird Science: Seasons #1-#2

Cheese fans will enjoy a couple of bargain double feature DVDs this week.

Wanted: Dead Or Alive/Death Before Dishonor features two eminently cheesy ’80s action movies. The first is a Rutgar Hauer film supposedly about the modern day descendant of Steve McQueen’s bounty hunter from the similarly titled ’50s Western TV show that started his career. (It’s the show where McQueen carried a saw-down rifle in place of a revolver.) If you ever wanted to see Gene Simmons playing a super-evil terrorist, this is the one for you. Death Before Dishonor features Fred “Hunter” Dryer as a Marine who kills a lot of bad people.

Then there’s the fun, typically quirky Australian sci-fier Dead End Drive-In, joined with Cut and Run. The first is about a post-apocalyptic Eee-vil government that seeks to placate citizens by herding them into drive-in camps where they live in cars, watch cheesy movies all day and are given junk food to eat. Sounds good to me. Cut and Run is apparently another cannibal movie by the maker of Cannibal Apocalypse. Not my bag, but hey, two movies for under $10.

7 Murders for Scotland Yard
A 1971 Paul Naschy cannibalism flick about a modern Jack the Ripper terrorizing London.

Emanuelle: Queen of the Desert is another in the endless line of Euro softcore sleeze films starring the oft-naked Laura Gemser. This one has the additional advantage of campy, way too serious ‘revolutionary’ politics as Emanuelle gets caught up in a guerilla war.

Gladiators Seven (Widescreen)
More Italian sword and sandal action.

Undead Or Alive
A western zombie film (!!) starring Chris Kattan (!!!!!!!!). WTF??

Meanwhile, although not new, camp lovers may wish to grab Amazon’s deal on the five-disc Buck Rogers in the 25th Century – The Complete Epic Series set for only $15.50.  Remember to buy something else too, though, because you get free (if slow) shipping for any order over $25. Beedy-beedy.

Other nice bargains at Amazon right now include the old 9 disc Alien Quadriliogy set for $33, 66% off list.

Then there’s the 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary set, featuring both the original version and a (eh) colorized version that at least was overseen by Ray Harryhausen himself. Plus extras, and half off list at only $12.50.

Meanwhile, my very favorite Harryhausen (dig that score!) Mysterious Island is also half off.

Or, if you don’t need the super souped-up editions (and these are still pretty sweet, check out these very cheap bargain sets, for about half off, each with five classics for only $31:

How about all three Darkman movies for $10?

The Tremors Attack Pack features the all four films for only $10.

Or, hey, how about a buttload of primo Godzilla movies, at 60% off list at $10 per?

Latitude Zero! Yeah, I’m gonna need that. Also, I saw that Amazon currently has very nice prices on the three Charlie Chan collections. They’re $26 each.

  • Actually, a lot of their older movie sets; Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, all good stuff.

And I agree, Latitude Zero is *very* exciting.

  • Sandy Petersen

i’d like to point out that Legends of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds is on it’s way as well. Supposed to be released on December 18. I’ve already pre-ordered MINE!

  • Re: Sandy — Yes it will be listed in next week’s offering. Legend has always a notoriously hard to see film, so this is very cool. It probably won’t be very good–certainly I’d prioritize owning Latitude Zero if it’s a choice–but damn, a dinosaur movie I haven’t seen!! Woo-hoo!

    Hi Ken,

Nice roundup as ever, but I’ve got to come out of lurking status to correct you on the comments about Cut and Run:

First, it’s from director Ruggero Deodato, who directed Cannibal *Holocaust* not Apocalypse (little difference in the titles, but believe me they’re very different movies).

Also, IIRC, it’s not exactly a cannibal movie, more of cheesy action thriller with added gore. Worth viewing for the cast alone in my opinion (Michael Berryman, Richard Lynch, Lisa Blount, Karen Black, Eriq La Salle(!)).

Anyway, keep up the good work!

  • PaulT — Thanks!! It’s nice to know that when I screw up on a subject I’m not too conversant with, there’s some knowledgeable reader to jump in with the correct dope. Obviously I should have spent a few more minutes on the IMDB regarding this one.

  • The Rev. D.D.

OOOOOO, I’ve never seen Latitude Zero! I have GOT to get that! It will sit in a place of honor right next to my Dogora and Matango DVDs!

Legend of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Birds on DVD…finally I can replace my VCR cassette! Yay!
Wait…my cassette’s in dandy condition ’cause I’ve only watched that crapfest once, which was many years ago when I first bought it.
    Never mind.

(I do need to get Attack of the Supermonsters on DVD though.)
